Hasnt anyone tried these, they're all over ebay. What about the various flashers. What about replacing the v60c extendable with the v60t's stubby? Will they overheat? Loose reception?

Overheat??.............no. Loose reception................maybee. No I have not tried one out yet...........but the way the V60c antenna is.............any replacement would be better than the stock one. High dollare phone with a 2 cent antenna.................That's Motorola! |

Over heat is due if it goes to analog............or if there is a phone defect The antenna will not cause the phone to overheat. Not unless you put something down the antenna that attaches to the battery bypassing the module inverter causing a quantum flux in the warpdrive making your phone faster than the speed of light and then the friction will cause the phone to overheat due to not haveing connected the sheilds on it! That is how the phone becomes overheated LOL no but seriously..................Analog will make it go hot, a phone malfunction (not antenna based), or it going to warp. |

I had one of the steel stubbies on my older Vader phone, and reception was GREATLY affected. I wound up taking it off. That phone had a pull-out antenna, though - so with the stationary antenna on the V60, maybe something smaller won't affect it as much. I plan to try one out - it's only a matter of time until I snap my factory antenna off - I'd rather avoid that. As far as the flashing antennas - well, I guess if you already have those LED washer nozzles on your car, might as well go for it. Yuck. |

I have the answer to all your guys question about the steel antennas. I just received mine in the mail today. I bought the steel antenna with a blue crystal on the top. It looks great! I can't say that much for reception. It sucks! I get about the same reception with my broken antenna and with the steel stubby. Just wasted 10 bucks and 3 days of anticipation to talk on the phone.

I sort of figured that would be the answer. I've read that there is a direct correspondency between antenna and waveband but I'm not sure just how sensitive that is. Your post confirms that shortening the antenna is not a good idea.

The reason Motorola provides the 2-cent antenna is simple. You have to replace it. Why is this good for Motorola? Only an authorized Motorola Service Center can replace the antenna. You can no longer just buy a certified replacement antenna. The cost? $15 for the part and the labor. That's an almost guaranteed 15$ extra coming in per phone.

Well I can tell you this about the retractable antennas. Have you ever wondered why Voicestream phones don't some with retractable antennas? The manager at the store told me because the signal (he called it something else that I can't remember, but it means the same thing) is only so big, and that the retractable antennas don't do anything. My question is do you all think that it only applies to Voicestream or other providers aswell. |

Yes, Motorola has the greediest antenna department ever. Everyone assumes the antenna is covered under the warranty too. They should just make the antenna like all the other Verizon phones. But they have to different, like how they have the send and end buttons switched compared to the other brands... |

i prefer to have an antenna and have it extended because when i use the phone at times when i dont have my headset on i'd like to keep the radiation as far away from my head as possible.

Is there a trick to removing the factory antenna from the v60? I have a replacement I want to try, but the antenna seems very difficult to remove. Is the grey button on the back of the phone related to this?

OK, I came across this board because my antenna broke off and I just want to answer some of your questions about the bad antenna design and ask some questions myself. KevinJames: "I sort of figured that would be the answer. I've read that there is a direct correspondency between antenna and waveband but I'm not sure just how sensitive that is. Your post confirms that shortening the antenna is not a good idea. " That is correct, the length of the antenna does have something to do with the reception. A good antenna should match the wavelength of the freq.. or be a forth of the wavelength. The higher the freq. the smaller the antenna. Which answers another question about the V60 phones. aiwapro: "Well I can tell you this about the retractable antennas. Have you ever wondered why Voicestream phones don't some with retractable antennas? The manager at the store told me because the signal (he called it something else that I can't remember, but it means the same thing) is only so big, and that the retractable antennas don't do anything. My question is do you all think that it only applies to Voicestream or other providers aswell." The V60's with the non-extendable antenna use a higher frequency than Verizon(800mhz). They are on VoiceStream and VoiceStream's frequency is 1900mhz, twice that of Verizon, so the antenna can be roughly half the size and still get good reception (remember, the higher the frequency the smaller the wavelength). One other thing I wanted to point out is the reason the antenna doesn't retract into the phone is because the phone has an aluminum case. Metal cuts down on the signal strength, so if it retracted into the phone, like most do it, would not get a good signal. Hope this answers some of the questions reguarding the V60. So how does the antenna come off on the VoiceStream phones? E |

So now a quesiton on the one brand I have not read about here... I have a v60 with AT&T. I want to replace the fixed antenna with the retractable one for the verizon phone. First, can this be done? Second, is it worth the trouble? |

It can not be done! They both have a different fitting.

Hey, I was wondering if you ever heard or tried out that retractable antenna for the v60. I was interested in switching my stub for a retractable one in hopes of getting better service from AT&T. Thanks! |

Yeah, I went to daydeal.com and got that $24.95 antenna for $9.99 w/ free shipping. It should come in a few days and I will post the results. I have a V60t with AT&T, and my antenna is still there and fine (after 6 months), but I think that it is ugly. Kat |

Hi, I work in the Antenna Lab at Penn State, and just wanted to give a technical notes on cell phone antennas. First of all any type of antenna has a certain impedance at which it radiates into free space. The output end of the phone is designed to only drive an antenna of a certain impedance. If the antenna is shortened (or lengthed) the impedance of the antenna changes. So if you operate your cell phone with the antenna down, the impedance of the antenna will change. What this means is that not all of the power is being radiated into space, but is reflected back into the RF end of the cell phone. The reflected power heats up the chips which drive the antenna (to put as simply as possible). So not only does the antenna radiate poor, energy is wasted as heat in the cell phone. Most phones are designed to take this abuse, but prolonged use with the antenna can certain lower the life of the cell phone. Now copper (which is probably what is in most factory antennas) is a much, much better conductor than steel, so changing the antenna could change the impedance, lowering the radiation efficiency. Of course if they are careful in there design they can adjust the antenna geometry to compensate for this. Well, to make a long post short, steel antennas are probably not worth it, and all antenna should be used in the full up position for the best performance. A guy trying to complicate the issues |
