From RCR News:
Sprint PCS gets good marks on PTT launch
Nov. 17, 2003 1:19 PM EST
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—Industry analysts have initially given Sprint PCS’ recently launched Ready Link service positive reviews noting the service is superior to Verizon Wireless
’ Push-to-Talk service, but not quite up to the industry-leading level of Nextel Communications Inc.’s Direct Connect offering.
Initial testing by RBC Capital Markets showed Ready Link provided set-up latency of between two and two and a half seconds versus five to six seconds or longer with Verizon Wireless
and between half a second and one and a half seconds with Nextel. Round-trip intra-call latency was measured at between three and a half and four seconds on the Ready Link service compared with five and a half seconds with Verizon Wireless
and a negligible delay with Nextel.
RBC telecommunications analyst Jonathan Atkin noted Ready Link gained its intra-call latency advantage over Verizon Wireless through a lower talk-time permit latency of seven-tenths of a second compared with nearly two seconds using the Verizon Wireless service.
Atkin added that Ready Link’s strong performance along with an attractive handset selection and pricing should allow for stronger growth than Verizon Wireless has seen since its launched its service earlier this year.
“Based on how the PCS Ready Link product currently performs, coupled with its handset selection and pricing, we believe the company will see a stronger ramp in PTT penetration than [Verizon Wireless], though we believe that [Nextel’s] differentiation should remain intact due to its still-superior performance,” said Atkin.
While Ready Link’s performance was better than expected, the service was not without its early problems as the Web page set-up to allow customers to manage their group contacts list was not operational early Monday.
Stronger than ever, ever before!

"Sprint Guy" laughs @ "Canyouhearmenow?" guy and steps on the V60p. Bah. The Verizon
cheerleaders promised the death of Nextel. I predicted PTT would have no impact on Verizon
or Nextel
's bottom line. I was right. The same goes for Sprint. Cingular is having issues with their PTT service but they have one thing going for them nobody else has... a v600 variant with PTT. Regardless PTT is still a service running on top of the cellular network and will never have the same speed and reliability of Nextel
. You might as well consider PTT like text and picture messages, an interesting add-on some people will pay to use, and become bored with after a few weeks.

"Sprint Guy" laughs @ "Canyouhearmenow?" guy and steps on the V60p. That data isnt exactly correct. It was clearly taken immediately after launch of Verizon
ptt. Since launch, many improvements have been made, setup and latency have decreased down to about what sprints is.
To think that there would be any lasting difference between vzw ptt and ready link doesnt make sense, they are built on the same technology, both use voIP and once all the glitches are ironed out, theyll basically be the same productNew Job = New Phone

"Sprint Guy" laughs @ "Canyouhearmenow?" guy and steps on the V60p. Ok I just don't get that SPCS service would be that much better than VZW PTT service. I mean I've used Nextel and if PTT is your thing, then Nextel is clearly on top of that because the latency with "Direct Connect" is only like 750 milliseconds or better. Nextel's Direct Connect is pretty much instant but their cell coverage isn't that great. Granted I switched over to VZW hoping their PTT was good and it was a little bit of a let down. Although I'm sure with both SPCS and VZW that once everything is ironed out with their PTT then they will be a threat to Nextel. As for right now Nextel sits on top with PTT. Although with me switching to Verizon I have never hit a spot where I didn't have service. The cell coverage with Verizon here in GA is just superior over Sprint, Nextel, T-Mobile, and Cingular. But I mean I think people are expecting a little too much out of PTT from the get go. Because Nextel perfected their service for like 10 years so yeah I think they should be on top spending all that time with the product. However I just don't see other companies PTT working perfect over night. But I do think the other PTT services will soon be good in due time.

"Sprint Guy" laughs @ "Canyouhearmenow?" guy and steps on the V60p. Exactly, especially since, as Bonoriffic pointed out yesterday, they both use Winphoria. The only differentiating factor will be how the network itself is tuned.Originally posted by: GoodmanR

"Sprint Guy" laughs @ "Canyouhearmenow?" guy and steps on the V60p. I agree with bonor....I don't think any of these new PTT offerings are going to have much of an impact to Nextel
. Companies have too much invested in phones and setup to toss all that in the trash, spend thousands on new phones for a service that is new and not as good as their existing service.
Now...If Verizon
or Sprint said..."OK...your existing phones will work with out PTT service...it will be completely transparent to your phone users" Then they may have something... These new providers won't get any of Nextel
's big customers...those are too entrenched.

"Sprint Guy" laughs @ "Canyouhearmenow?" guy and steps on the V60p. Just reading the letters "PTT" gives me a headache. Remember the good 'ol days and the hype leading up to Verizons PTT?? It's amazing we all didn't have heart attacks.

"Sprint Guy" laughs @ "Canyouhearmenow?" guy and steps on the V60p. You guys are opening your mouth too soon. You can't say Nextel
will not be affected just yet because Verizon
's and Sprint's PTT offerings are still too young. Let's be fair and give the new PTT technologies some time to mature before judging them. Nextel had over 10 years to get their PTT where it is today and you are comparing it to Verizon
's and Sprint's newborn PTT offerings. That's too unfair. Time will eventually prove you all wrong and you'll see Nextel
fall. This will take at least a couple of years, not weeks as you guys think. If you think Nextel is not being affected, why do you think they are crying like babies every time any carrier does something to compete? They obviously feel threatened and with enough reason because they know what's coming for them. Just be patient and you'll see what I mean. "Sprint Guy" laughs @ "Canyouhearmenow?" guy and steps on the V60p. Oh yeah, well the "Can oyu hear me now?" guy brought me chinese food in a limo once. And I have a closet full of Verizon
shirts, and coffee mugs, and pens, and paper, and duffle bags, and frizbees, and cups, and bottles, and flashlights, and umbrellas, and notebooks, and hats, and footballs, and gum, and a motorola golf tee set. And I don't even play golf.

Those Flashlights suck! The LED keychains I sell to raise $$$ for XPG are 10X brighter. The best Verizon
freebies are the metal biz card cases and the stress-balls.
IN CONTINUATION OF THE THREAD TITLE:
After the Sprint flasher (he DOES wear a trenchcoat and hang at sorority houses!) steps on the v60p, Mr C.Y.H.M.N. just looks at him and says "So? Thats ONE phone. BTW..hows that LNP thing coming?" ...And hits him in the arm.
Also heard Sprint was changing their name to "Fast Paced Walk"Chris Tanner
