Yep, to no avail.

Now I really need your help. All of the Moto components install correctly since the Hardware Assistant finds P2k.sys. The only thing it doesn't get is the "USB Connection Device" part (the typical yellow exclamation mark symbol superimposed on the USB symbol found under USB Controllers in the Device Manager). I have no idea what it is asking for. It seems an .inf or .sys file is missing but none of the p2kdrivers (version 2.9.) work. Whenever I start up P2K Commander, it will show AT device connected and then switch to P2k mode and then state: "Phone not connected" or "AT device disconnected" within a few seconds.

This is really frustrating since everything else seems to work.

ok, try this, I think this is the one that I finally got to work. Change the extension from .ZIP to .EXE (You can't upload .EXE files) I'm running Win XP Pro w/ sp2.

Well, I did a bit of research and found that I had to enter the Bootloader mode by holding *+# while powering on. I've gotten everything to work, the only thing eluding me now is how to activate Field Test Mode. I know that I need a certain flash/flex file but it certainly can't be a version for the V3.

How did you get it to work on yours, Jay? The V525 and the V551 are the same series after all.

I've never had to enter bootloader mode on my phone. Engineering is included in flex #MMV551ZP074_U_SW8.17.0FR from Motomodders.net. That flex has many mods in it already like manual network selection, engineering mode, and it takes media mall and all the preloaded content off the phone.

Ok sounds good, I'll give it a try. Flashing the V525 to the V600 firmware removed all of the Vodafone UK junk as well. I've been able to flash using either PST 7.2.3 or Multiflashflex.exe.

Thanks for the hint.

I don't think I've ever used PST. Multiflashflex is nice, and I've used MotoKit as well.

MultiFlashFlex is very simple to use, I like how detailed yet simple the UI is. I've also used P2Ktools to activate several features on my V525 such as Lines 1 & 2 and a couple new vibe options. The V551 flex from Motomodders.net didn't work on my V525 and it wreaked havoc with the audio components since I could still use the phone but somehow the flex disabled the mic and earpiece speaker output.

At least it's finally working and now I have the V525 --> V600 flash loaded making it possible to play back videos and the menus also look much more appealing/are dynamic.

I wasn't aware the V525 was a triplets phone. I thought it was a european version of the V551. Sorry, my bust. There are lots of custom V600 flexes out there - they should all work on your triplets phone. Keep us posted on your progress.

Later, Jay

Hi,
I'm using Motorola E398 phone.
I'm using skinner4moto to create the skins and P2kCommander-V3.2.9 to upload to phone.
But the P2kCommander-V3.2.9 is giving some problems. It says "Phone not connected . You must plug phone before you start *.p2kc file."
I have connected the phone and the P2kCommander in sys tray says "Connected as AT device".
Pls help me.

Thanx
Girish

The drivers are very tricky. You need to uninstall everything and go to www.motomodders.net and download the newest set of drivers, and install them exactly as indicated. The drivers are especially tempermental with Windows XP SP2. I'm sorry I can't do much more to help you, but I don't have much experience troubleshooting the software.

That would explain why I had some problems with my laptop. I wouldn't be surprised if the same will happen once I try this out on my PC which has SP2.

Thanks for the headsup,

You need software to do it. Most people use Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools, or MPT for short. There are many sources for the software. Many cell phone dealers sell it, and it is also available on Ebay. This is probably the best bet for a beginner. Personally I use P2K Commander available from www.motomodders.net but this is a more advanced program as you are directly dealing with the file system of the phone, and the drivers are tricky to install.

Modding is fun.. I thought I messed up my phone when i changed the housing on it, it was fun though, I don't think i'd ever want to do it again though... I thought I had killed my expensive phone.

Its not just fun, its addictive. You really need to have 2 phones though. One to mod, and one to use when you screw up the first one until you figure out your mistake.

Wow, you recommend people buy two phones to do mods? i think a better recommendation would be is that if they don't feel comfortable with modding their phone not to try it for it will rendered their phones useless.

Also, folks, if you just simply want to transfer images and ringers to your phones just stick with Mobile Phones Tools, you run less of a risk of damaging your phone with software that's too complicated to use for beginners like P2K.

There have been short periods where my phone didn't work because of "Experiments" I had conducted. I had wished I had a second phone in those instances. There are some mods that I absolutely will not attempt until I have a second phone. Anyone serious in really getting in there and making major changes to their phone's file system should do so knowing the risks of "bricking" their phone, and should have a standby ready in case things go wrong.

I see where you're coming from, but unfortunately most are looking for hands on experience as well as step by step guides and correct answers to methods on how to mod their phones, i personally wouldn't wan't to guess on how to do seem editing and buying a second handset can get expensive for some, so i say read as much as you can from the links provided before you go and try to do any modding, and again if you just want to transfer pictures and ringers, use only the necessary software to do so, that might make it less confusing in the end..

I found another good site with some software for modding. Some of the text is in Russian, but there's enough english for you to navigate and figure out what's there.

Jay, I know that you love modding
and also that you are very good at it. However, modding can be very dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced person.

I think all your modding recommendations should come with a warning of something like:

"Modding is extremely dangerous for the health of your phone, please be aware of the consequences and do not attempt without step by step instructions if you have never done it before."

Oh Beautiful Charlyee, I have considered that. A statement similar to that is in post # 1 of this thread...

Excellent thread!!! And I agree that modding can be dangerous just ask me about frying my Razr less than month after buying it I had gotten a little brave after being so successful loading wallpapers, ringtones and skins, that I started to try additional items. Like deleting files and replacing them with files that were supposed to change the menu structure in the system directory. First one worked great so I tried another one, oops!!! Phone would no longer boot up. I knew if I could re-flash I could get it working again, but while I was able to find the flash file could not locate the software to do it with. In this thread I found all the software I need plus instructions. Well already modding my V557 wonder how long before I blow that one up??? At least if I do, might be able to fix it this time.

Thanks! I'm glad you found everything you needed! That's why I created this thread, because when I started modding I would find bits & pieces all over the place. I decided to pull everything into one place to make it a little easier.

If you are into flashing, flexing, seem editing and all that for the V3, here is a link to an excellent guide that not only explains it in easy terms but gives you the step by step. Recommended reading if you want to, or just curious about modding your V3.

This guide was available (and for now still is) at motomodders.net, but the guide has been moved to it's own site.
