Default PPC Application Recommendations

I've seen a few threads like this on other forums and I figure we might add one here for new PPC Owners who want to add functionality to their device. Feel free to recommend some of your favorite applications for PPC, please supply a link and if it's commercial or open licensed (Paid or Free)

Here's My Personal List:

News & Weather:

AvantGo - http://www.avantgo.com - Free with a subscription for enhanced services, basically a Feeds Synchronization engine.

Today Plugins:

I use Bluetooth Audio and Quick Dial both available freely from http://www.trianglepowers.com/ppc6700/ (it will work on most any ppc device, specifically from HTC)

Instant Messaging Solutions:

Agile Mobile - www.agilemobile.com was free but I think it's going commercial now

Utilities:

InClose Mobile - www.insoftwarehouse.com/ - Free, allows the x to actually shut down programs, is also a simplified way to manage running applications.

WifiFoFum - www.aspecto-software.com/ - Free Wifi Scanner

Batti - http://pda.jasnapaka.com/batti/ - Good Battery Monitor

Microsoft Voice Command - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...d/default.mspx
- Commercial software, great improvement over the stock voice dialer

Virtual Earth Mobile - http://www.viavirtualearth.com/vve/G.../VEMobile.ashx - Free, basically google earth for your PPC

Pocket WakeUp - Free, I can't find a direct link to the Developer SunsiaSoft, plug in Pocket WakeUP into google and you can find it to download it in the top 3 links.

Saki Mobile aka MySaki - www.mysaki.com - Interesting little social app, with a friend finder (manually entered information only currently,) RSS Feeds, and Push Email/News. Kinda Resource intensive as it's flash and you will need to install flash first.

Keep in mind what works for me may not work for you, I've gone mostly with free software with the exception of the MS Voice Command Application. I'm looking forward to what others post, to see what may work better than what I have.

Good Luck

My two favorite applications are Microsoft Voice Command, and TomTom 5. I use both on a daily basis.

Have you tried Virtual Earth with GPS? I don't currently have a GPS receiver and don't foresee getting my hands on one soon, so if you don't mind give it a whirl and let me know.

I tired, but I can't get the GPS function to work. Does anyone know what COM port the GPS is on? I'm using a HP iPAQ 6515 with Win Mobile 2003. Tom Tom auto-detects it so I don't know what COM it is really using.

This is what I'm running on my Sprint PPC6700. All of these programs play nicely together and my system is (finally!) extremely stable. I actually own quite a few other programs, but they either took up space I wasn't willing to give them, or they made the system unstable. So out they went! I'd be happy to give more detail if anyone wants it.

I'd really recommend Map4PDA (http://www.mapforpda.com) - you can either use a GPS receiver or just put in addresses - and it will take addresses from your contact list. It allows you to switch between Virtual Earth (MSN), Yahoo, Google, and Ask maps on the fly and has a pretty good search function for POI's. And best of all - it's free! - sheureka

Default Re: PPC Application Recommendations

OK, here are some more programs. The first few are for the Treo 700w/wx only! The rest should work on other devices.

---- Treo 700w/wx only! ----

Treo Alerts Pro - ppcgeeks.com Free! A lighter version of phoneAlarm. Must have Mortscript installed!!!

cDate - treocentral.com Free! Replaces the carrier name in the carrier/E911/bluetooth line with the date. Must have Mortscript installed!!!

Removelogo - ppcgeeks.com Free! If the Mort scripts above arn't to your liking, this will hide the carrier/E911/Bluetooth line giving you more room on your square screen.

hannip's A2DP Bluetooth stack - treocentral.com Free! Improves Bluetooth & adds A2DP to Sprint's 700wx & Verizon's 700w. (extracted from the Verizon 700wx)

---- Should work on most other PPC devices! ----

Keylight - pocketmax Free! Toggle on/off your keyboard lights. Good way to save some power!

WP-Pilot - ppcgeeks Free! This adds one-handed navigation to most Weather Panel layouts.

Mortscript - sto-helit.de Free! You need this to make the first two Treo scripts work! This will run on other devices. You will just need to find/make scripts that run on your device.

TodayAgenda - tiews.info Free! It replaces the default Outlook plugin with a lot of more features.

Sipchange/NullKB - ppcgeeks Free! This combo makes it possible to stop the on screen keyboard from popping up, great for Treo 700w/wx owners.

SKTools - s-k-tools.com $13 Cleans & tweeks your device for better preformance and looks. Goes perfectly with MemMaid.

NewsBreak - iliumsoft.com $20 ($8 if the special is still valid) Great RSS reader with other features.

iLauncher - sbsh $15 Adds shortcuts to your today screen, plus many more features like my personal favorite the task manager.

Kevtris - caywen Free! Great Tetris clone! One of the few games with true square screen support.

Enjoy!

Has anyone tried any of the "Remote Control" applications. Where it turns your PDA into a universal remote control? I have been wanting to try one out but don't want to shell out $20+ if it wil be silly.

I just got a WiFi SD card for my 750, mainly to access data from overseas. It works great . Setting it up was a breeze and all the instructions are from here.

Where are you going? That will be fun to have the Treo overseas, the wifi should definitely save on data charges!

I've tried Novii, it's a novelty app, at least on my 8125, the IR Port on these devices isn't really meant for the range but they do work.

Here's a list of my favorite applications so far, and the best part is they are all FREE!

I must say that Opera 4 is far better than Internet Explorer that is preinstalled on WM 6

www.operamini.com

I also like the Band Switch application. It enables you to turn off 3G when you're not using it and go to GSM for extended battery life.

BandSwitch gprs umts band wcdma

I've also been experimenting with WiFiRouter. It enables you to set up your WM5 or WM6 device as a portable WiFi access point!

WMWifiRouter v0.3 freeware for Pocket PC windows mobile and wm5 or wm6 ppc, PocketPC free downloads.

Windows LIVE! search tool is fantastic. I love the fact that I can map gas prices in the area and even when out of town get the cheapest gas. The voice recognition search also works extremely well.

Windows Mobile Live Search

Later,
Jay

Welcome back to WM! I'm sure you would like all of the applications I listed in my prevoius post, and TomTom Navigator 6 is also a must-have application. I recommend the 4gb storage card so you can put the big map in and still have lots of memory left.

I need to get a car charger if I am going to start using the Tom Tom as I know the GPS sucks down the battery!

I have been enjoying live search, that works very well with the GPS...I love pulling up the satellite image of where I am. It's crazy how accurate it is! It even tracks me as I walk around my house or office. Very creepy!

I've been using my Motorola V3 charger with no problems.

I recommend reset scheduler. It schedules a soft reset daily as a task, so the program is not always running in the background. I have my phone reset daily at 4:00 am and it blissfully soft resets while I sleep. I have not had to soft reset the phone manually since I installed this.

Thank Jay, great recommendation

I just installed the .cab file, it was a breeze. The only problem I had was the file didn't open after downloading & I went to look for it, I was expecting the file to say "soft rest" & not "gibbs", so it took a little time.

I set mine for 5:00 am.

Mine ended up in the "programs" folder of the start menu and it was titled "Reset Options". I think I'm going to move it to the settings folder though.

Jay, that's where mine was & under the same name. I was using the File Explorer to look for & in there it is "GibbsUsa". That is good idea I will move mine to settings also.

The Official at&t WM6 upgrade for the Treo 750, is finally available on the Palm site. I have not done the upgrade yet, trying to figure out if all the things that are claimed to be "broken" by the upgrade are true and if so can I live with them.

Treo 750 Updater 2.25

Charlyee,

I did the update last night and had no issues. One of the things that helped make it easy for me was having a Mac, and going about the update via the Mini SD card. Makes it a TON easier than Activesync if you don't already have it installed.

HERE is the link if you want to check out how to do it that way.

Super simple!

Thanks AZ, good to know. I have to do it the SD card way since I can't ActiveSync with the data cable, don"t ask. . I have to get a Mini SD card reader first.

Question for you, can you get the "Notes" to Sync, there is some rumor floating around that it is greyed out.

So in your opinion, was it worth it & what do you see as the essential benefits.

Thanks Much
