Default Recommended Cables & Software

I have just upgraded to the LG VX6000 and LG VX4500. I would like to buy data cables and/or software to be able to upload ringtones, modify the phones, etc.

After checking several websites, there seem to be two different types of cables: Straight through USB, and a USB cable with a "bulge" in the center, which my reading leads me to believe is some sort of a Serial to USB conversion.

Which type of cable is better? Will each type of cable only work with certain software?

I've seen a lot of mention of BitPim here on the message boards. I've also found a bunch of websites selling software by a company called DataPilot, often with a cable included. Any direction you guys can offer would be appreciated.

Do I need a different cable for each of these phones, or is there one that will work for both?

Lastly, everyone seems to be talking about uploading/downloading ringtones and graphics to the phone, but what about games or other "apps" like those found on Verizon's Get It Now?

You were pretty much correct with all your guesses. The software to use with your 4500 is BitPim; in fact, they just released a test version with specific updates for this phone.

I know that the program will work correctly with the cable you get with Verizon Mobile Office. However, that package is $39.99. If you'd rather save money, I believe that the USB->Serial cable will work correctly (the straight USB cable has been cited several times as not working at all).

Unfortunately, I haven't talked to anyone who has bought one of these cables, only the mobile office cables. Still, you can grab one from radioshack for $20 and return it if it doesn't work.

The same cable should work with both phones.
