genearally the system selection for a/b determines which "side" of the network your phone runs on......... this goes back to the days when there were only 2 provides in each market and the were each given a side. The land line carriers were given the b side, and the non ll provider was given the a side. this was done b/c easch was operating on the same frequency, so the amount of channels available was broken up. You used to have to change sides manually each time you went into a market where your provider was on a different side. this was a hassle to phone manufactors started making phones that changed for you. hence the automatic a and automatic b options. if you set it to a only b, only or home only you will only be able to use your phone on a frequencies, b frequenies and your home (your sid based home area) area. any were else, and you will get either an error from another provider telling you can't use your phone, a no serive message on the phone (hime only usually does this) or a whole bunch of roaming charges on your bill, and you will probably be in analog( if your phone has it) to boot. hope this clears it up for ya anything else just let me know........

to be more precise, most cellular phones have the ability to switch to the "A" or the "B" frequency bands, which is called a/b switching. This feature is useful when roaming outside your home coverage area.

Our PRL's do this all for us automatically on our new phones anyway, right? It's hard to override the PRL (ie impossible)

It depends on where your home area is... here in South Carolina it is Automatic A. Like I said before, it really doesn't matter because the PRL overrides the setting we can choose (A or B).

true, but in order to have the latest "prl/version" you still have to manualy dial *228 option 2 to update it. and that's if your phone is "OTA" capable.

If your SID is even numbers (example 40, 20, 22,...) you are a "B" carrier. If your SID is odd numbers (Example 117, 43,...) you are a "A" Carrier
