Hi! I just got a VX10. I want to add a "blank" or "silent" ringtone to the VX10. I have a small midi file called "blank.mid". Can I install it somehow? Why can't I just e-mail the midi file to my cell phone and have it install that way? The VX10 allows you to assign specific rings to specific people in the phonebook. I want to assign a "silent" ring to some people so the phone won't ring. Thanks!!! (It seems that the Get It Now options don't have any silent rings available for download.) |

To load any files that DON'T come from Get It Now, you have to have a USB/Serial data cable specific to your phone. They usually cost less that $30 (I hear $20, but I paid full price). Radio Shack sells one that I see is recommended in the Yahoo Groups for the VX10. I got mine thru Verizon (probably why it was more expensive). After you get the cable, you need the drivers for it. They should come with the cable, if not try Windows Update. I used them and they work. After you have cable and drivers you need some software to communicate with the phone. You can try gagin or bitpim. I couldn't get bitpim to work, so I recc gagin. Plug in the cable, let windows load the drivers, plug in the phone. Goto the Device Manager and find the device "USB Serial Port (COM4)" (yours may not be on COM4, so double check that). Go into it's properties and port settings. Set it for 115200 bits per second, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, and hardware flow control. On the phone, go into the Menu, scroll right twice to Features, select Data Setting, select Data Baud, scroll thru the numbers until you hit 115,200. OK that and then exit the menu. Now fire up gagin. It asks what COM port your phone is on, tell it what you learned from the Device Manager (probably COM4). After it connects to the phone, it will bring up a windows-like folder tree. Go into the folder user/sound/ringer. This will list the midi files that you currently have available to your phone (probably downloaded thru Get It Now). Right click in the right window pane (where the midi files are listed) and select New, and the File. This will pop up a window for you to select a file to load into the phone. Click the Browse button to find your blank.mid file. IMPORTANT: change the second line in this window (Specify Path/Filename to Persist on Device) - - add user in front of /sound/ringer so that it reads user/sound/ringer Then hit OK and it will load the file into your phone. It will NOT show in gagin, as the program does not refresh the file display. Go to the Device menu at the top of gagin, and select Offline. Your phone will say No Service, and you will get a popup window from gagin. That's OK. Go to the Device menu again, and select Reset. This will reboot your phone. After your phone is back up and shows time/date/etc. unplug it from the USB cable, and go into your menus to change your ringer to blank.mid. It will be on the list now. Enjoy. Tom |
