Buying the VX4400 (or any phone) at radio shack?

If I buy a phone at Radio Shack (it'd be an upgrade, I already have verizon service) do I need to activate it then?

I was in there today and the register jockey said that the price of the phone was $199 bucks regardless of 1 or 2 year
contract...

so if thats true, then I'd like to the pick the phone up there for $199 + rebate. Then activate it later via verizons customer
service on a one year contract (never do a 2 year, not gonna wait 22 months for another upgrade opportunity). So I'd save
$30 bucks v.s. doing it at verizons store - since they want $230 for a 1 year.
