Hi- I've gotten myself in a pickle. I didn't know the locked/unlocked concept. Last week bought a Motorola V-something (quad band) to use while traveling. Bought it through cingular w/ 12 month contract. Sales guy thought my plan to insert Afghan SIM card was fine. But it wasn't. As you know, it was locked. I put the new card in. My Afghan pals and I used up four attempts at the unlock code, obviously unsuccessfully. Will my phone now be locked forever? Any advice? I'm here for a business trip for two more weeks, but want to use it on other international travels, which will be frequent with a new job. Thanks.

The problem is that after using up a number of tries (varies by manufacturer), you can only unlock by cable and the applicable unlock software. You might try going over to the Motorola Forum at Howard's Forums. There are loads of guides about the V series and there might be someone there who can tell you how to solve your problem. Just ask what the alternative method (i.e. cable) to unlocking via an unlock code is, if you ask for an unlock code, the thread is then normally closed. http://motorola.howardforums.com I assume you have the actual unlock code from Cingular? Good Luck,

I don't have the unlock code from Cingular. If I can't figure it out here, I'll work on it through customer service when I get back to the US in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, an Afghan friend offered to take the phone to a guy in Kabul who knows how to unlock phones. I asked if he does this service for stolen phones. He said yes. My friend took the phone there today, but the guy was not at work. How does my friend even know about this service, that's what I want to know! Do you think it is possible for this guy to actually unlock the phone? Will it harm my phone?

The "guy" probably just has a laptop with the correct cables and software. Its pretty hard to screw up the V series phones. I imagine if he is doing work with stolen phones, he's pretty good at what he does! Sad but true. "Most" v series lock codes can be bypassed with the security code. When prompted for the lock code, press the menu key, and you may be prompted for the six-digit security code instead, which is usually 000000 or 123456.

An update: my phone was successfully unlocked by somebody in Kabul this morning. It cost me 700 Afghanis (500 Afghanis to the dollar). It seems to work fine now! Thanks for the advice.
