Welcome to WirelessAdvisor!

Before we can make a recommendation, more information is needed...

1. Who is your current carrier?
2. To what country are you headed ?
3. How long will you be there?
3. How much do you plan on using the phone? (# of minutes)
4. Will you be sending texts or using a data connection for internet, e-mail, etc?
5. Will it be important for people in the states to be able to call you without getting charged long distance?

Let us know more info and we'll be able to provide a more specific recommendation...

My current carrier is AT&T, and I'm going to Germany. I'm gonna be there for 2-3 months for study abroad. I wanna call the U.S. at least twice a week in those few months. If rangeroamer has a cheap texting rate then I might add texting too. As for incoming calls, I will probably do all the calls, but it would be nice if my friends and family could call me without paying long distance. Do you have any information on rangeroamer? Because I really would like to try to get one of their plans.

Thanks!

just change your plan while you are gone...

Effective November 8, 2009, AT&T customers who frequently call or travel to Canada have a new rate plan option called AT&T Nation with Canada. Customers can enjoy benefits such as:

Anytime minutes (based on plan) and 1,000 Night & Weekend minutes to use in the United States and Canada.
Saving unused minutes with Rollover.
Unlimited calling to other AT&T Mobility customers in the United States only with Mobile to Mobile.
Data Pay Per Use data rate in the U.S. are $2/MB.
Data Pay Per Use data rate in Canada are $2/MB.
A-List and Early Nights & Weekends.

if you have a PDA , Blackberry or Iphone you can get a data plan for roaming as well....

or you can suspend your service for up to 6 months you will be charged 10 bux a month to hold the phone number for you... get your phone unlock and get a Rogers prepaid sim ... which ever works better for you

LOL!!!

If you have a Quad ATT phone then people can call you for free, but you pay the incoming charges. However, you can pay $5/month to reduce your charges down to something reasonable. Check ATT's web pages for rates on international roaming. You will only need to pay the extra 5/month for the 2 months, if you wish. Your friends just call your regular number. The ATT world Traveler rates are 0.99 from Germany. The RangeRoamer, I don't know much about, but the rates are 0.79 and the texting is the same as ATT, it seems. Not sure it is a big advantage.

Otherwise you can use Skype to call back to the states for pennies. Or Google Talk for free. Texting to you is free or out of whatever plan you have; texting to them is 0.50/text.

It would cost you a lot if you roam on your AT&T sim, as you are already aware. You can look into telnamobile or one of the other sims that give you a US number. Check the link below You just pay whatever the incoming rate in Germany is. Another option, is to get a local German sim, inoming calls will be free of course, then sign up with rebtel (free to sign up), and associate a US number to German sim, then give the US number to whoever needs to call you. You pa whatever rebtel charges to call your germain sim.
