Default Cellphone Ban for Ontario Drivers

Drivers in Ontario will now be breaking the law by using BlackBerrys, cellphones and other hand-held electronic devices while driving.

Drivers are no longer allowed to talk, text or e-mail while behind the wheel, or use portable video games or DVD players.

Global positioning systems are permitted - as long as they're safely secured to the dashboard.

Emergencies calls to 911 are the only exception to the ban.

For the first 3 months police will be educating motorists to stay off the phone instead of handing out tickets. However, drivers can still be charged under existing dangerous or careless driving laws.

Beginning February 1, 2010, drivers will be facing fines of up to $500 if they're caught violating the ban.

Hopefully Ontario drivers will be more conscientious about this than California ones. I still see just as many yahoos talking on their cell phone while driving as before.

Then again, why should I expect different from my fellow Californians...

Ha ha, yeah I hear ya. Although I'll admit, I've been guilty at times of doing up a quick text while driving on the highway. But, not any more.

As it stated, police will just be giving out warnings for the first little while. My buddy's girlfriend was just pulled over last night for talking on the cell phone while driving, she was just given a warning.

Out of curiosity, do you happen to know if Ontario the only province to enact a cell phone ban for drivers?

There are a few provinces that have them banned.

Quebec, Newfoundland & Labrador & Nova Scotia have all banned "hand held" cell phones from being used, but not "hands free".
I believe British Columbia will be doing the same in a vote next week. Alberta I think is still in the works apparently on passing the law. Manitoba is to proclaim the law next year and Saskatchewan sometime very shortly.

Prince Edward Island has a ban on new drivers using them, but I'm not sure if they've banned drivers using them completely. New Brunswick I'm not sure yet.

Yep, I saw a bunch of those fancy Ontario digital highway signs that displayed this info when I drove from Buffalo to Michigan through Canada last weekend. I liked how the signs said that both TEXTING and EMAIL are banned, and not just texting.

Good law, but you Canadians all drive too slow on the highways in rural farmland to be dangerous anyway ;-)

Ha ha, true, true. I guess I'm one of the very few who has a led foot, so me using my cell phone while driving is probably not a good thing. ha ha.

At least one of you Canadians might be a decent drive. Dude, what is up with the 100 kph limit in rural Ontario? 60 MPH?! The limit in most of Michigan, even urban highways is 70MPH. The worst part is that most people out there actually do 100 kph!!
However, on Sunday, there was a major speed trap by the OPP on the 402. I clued in on it ahead of time, and blended into a group of other Ontario plated cars going 100 kph.

Ha ha, well it is 100 kph, but I've been able to get away with going 130kph. Most people will usually go about 120 kph. If you drive around that, you should be ok.

However you may have noticed that once you get into Sarnia, the speed limit on the highway drops down to 70 kph because of occasional delays towards the bridge. But right now in that area the speed limit is 50 kph due to construction on the highway. Not a fan of that myself.

Yeah, it does gradually drop down near the bridge. That was the first trip I saw that half the road was missing and the limit was even lower.
The first time I drove that route, the truck backup was miles long, so I can understand the need for the lower limit.
