Default New additions on some Telus towers.

I didn't know whether to stick this in the Tower Hunting forum or here.

I've seen Telus towers around Ontario that have two different sectors of panels with two shelters at the bottom of them. Now I'm noticing almost all the Telus towers in my area that just had omnis on them, are now having a second set of panels added to them further down the tower. As well as a second shelter.

I'm just curious if anyone knows if it's a new carrier or possibly Koodo (a newer brand from Telus) that is latching on to them.

This is just something that I've been trying to figure out and wanting to see if anybody knows anything about this?

Thanks

nope, Koodoo uses the existing Bellus antennas. Your not confusing these with the UMTS antennas, no?

I'm not too sure what antennas they are. Earlier this year when I started this thread, I noticed newer antennas being added on all Bell Mobility towers and only on some Telus towers where there didn't seem to be a Bell tower close by.

Here are a couple of pics of one of the Telus towers, before and after the new antennas were added. As you can see in the first pic, it originally just had omni antennas on it like most of them in my area, but this year, sectorized antennas were added.

yup. i can tell by looking at the equiptment those are Bellus 3G UMTS Towers. They have coax to fibre and dc power boxes located just directly next to or below the antenna. This is how you can tell if its a Bellus tower, or you can get a 3G UMTS phone and do a network scan and see if 302-880 is scanning and see what dB reading you are getting from that imsi.

Very Interesting. So I'm assuming this is the same thing with the new antennas on the Bell Mobility towers as well?

Pic #1 is a latticed Bell tower with the newer antennas further down.

Pic #2 is of a monopole with two new sets of antennas that were just added.

EDIT: I JUST REALIZED THAT YOU MAY HAVE ALREADY ANSWERED MY QUESTION IN ONE OF MY PIC COMMENTS.

Alright......one more question, ha ha.

I also noticed that any of the Telus towers that had the 3G UMTS panels added to them also had an extra shelter at the bottom constructed as well.
The Bell towers however, did not have an extra shelter constructed, when the 3G panels were added. They just kept the old one.

Is there a specific reason for this?

Here is a close up of inside one of the Equiptment shelters that you speak of and here is a picture of one of the Tower's. This one belongs to Telus.

bell probaly uses fibre to re-locate the equiptment that would normally be in one of the shelters to a central housing complex called a Media Gateway.

Nice, great pics. I didn't realize some of the shelters looked so big on the inside.

Ah ok, I was just curious as to why that was. Thanks for that.

well some of the bigger ones are called a hub. they do a lot more than just a shelter. they kinda link a cluster to another.

Ah ok, makes sense. I think I might've seen those hubs on some of the more older towers.

So basically something like this one.

Could be the Bell shelter simply had extra space for a UMTS rack inside it and the Tellus one didn't. Could also be the FTTA (Fiber to the Antenna) thing WirelessMechanic mentioned, but that's something I haven't seenused much. Well, maybe in DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems) Hard to guess.

Yeah, I don't know either. The thought about Bell having extra room in their shelters did cross my mind though.
