Default i phone, France

I posted a question in the iphone group and got no reply so I am posting here.
I think I read that in France the iphone can not be locked to an individual carrier.
I went on the Apple site for France and saw that the iphone is available for all major carriers.

Here is my question.

Can anyone go into an Apple store in France and buy an unlocked iphone or do you have to have proof of service with Orange, SFR or Bouyges?

Do you know that you can even get an iPhone on prepaid?

Yes, I believe that at first the iPhone was with only one carrier, then it had to be unlocked by french law. However that does not mean you will get it at a discounted price. You will only get a discount if you sign with a carrier.

So are French iphones limited to 900 and 1800 or are they quad band?
Can I go into an Apple store and put in my U.S. t-mobile sim and get minimal functionality useful in the U.S?

As far as I know there are no 'special' versions for the countries where it works. iPhone is quad band so it will work on any GSM network world-wide. It won't work on T-Mobile's 3G network in the US as it doesn't have those bands.

There is only one iPhone 3G (and 3GS coming Friday). They are quad band plus 2100Mhz.

If you buy it from a store in France, you better confirm that it is unlocked completely, and will work on a US carrier.

If that is the case, you will be fine.

viewfly, you mean they are quad band GSM & triband 3G (850/1900/2100) just like other AT&T Smartphones, right?

Just checking

Palm850/v0100 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11)

Yes, you are more precise. I was only listing the frequencies, not the modes (UTMS or GSM).

Trying to keep me in line? There has got to be an "App for That" too.
