Default Canada summer visitor

To this point, I have been strictly a landline user so am a complete novice here. About July 1, I will be driving from Minnesota to Nova Scotia Canada through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan then via Rte 17 to Ottawa, Montreal, and New Brunswick to Nova Scotia. I will be returning to Minnesota in mid-October by the same route. My interest in having a cell phone is primarily for emergency use during the trips and quite probably for occasional voice calls while in Nova Scotia. Nothing more "exotic"!!

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Without making things too difficult for you if you can get hold of an unlocked GSM phone (you should be able to find one on craigslist or on eBay) and when you're in Canada go to a Rogers or Fido cellphone dealer and get a prepaid account. I believe the initial card will cost $25. Then you'll have to purchase an airtime card or a PIN to charge your phone.
