Hi, I'm an American living in Naples, Italy for 2-3 yrs. I need advice on how to get the best service for my new Blackberry Pearl 8100. I have a sim card from a local carrier (Tre, also called 3). I am aware that I can not get a Blackberry Service Plan here in Naples. 3 offers a service at 9 Euros a month where I get Windows Messenger Live, Skype (200 mins a month to call anywhere), Yahoo, Google and a few other Media Apps. Is this the way to go? I figure when I come back to the states I wll get Blackberry service then. In the meantime with this plan that I would be using over here can I still access at least some or all of the Blackberry Apps for my phone (I mean the one's that I would have to purchase), and as long as it is compatible with my phone? I have downloaded the latest software for my phone and placed it on my laptop which is Windows Vista. Thanks in advance for any help u can provide. J |

Maybe I'm thinking about this all wrong, but aren't all the things you mentioned TCP/IP-based, meaning they require a fast data connection (typically Wi-Fi or wired, sometimes 3G) and the appropriate app, plug-in or browser? All Yahoo and Google require is a browser, so these should be OK on the BB over 3G. The BB 8100 does not have Wi-Fi (according to Phonescoop), and Skype isn't available for it, according to the Skype download page. According to Wikipedia, Windows Live Messenger runs on Windows, Windows Mobile and S60. There is also a Mac client, but no BB client, as far as I can see. Blackberry Apps that just depend on a data connection (and not on the BIS server) should be fine, The most useful by far, in my opinion, is Google Maps for Mobile. Much better than the built-in Blackberry Maps application. You can dowload this at Google Maps. You probably also want the latest version of Opera Mini - better than the built-in browser. SW
