Did I read somewhere that iPhones sold in Europe, maybe just France or Germany, had to be unlocked at point of sale? Was I dreaming?

German phones are not allowed to be sim locked at all.. except the iPhone. Apple won and supreme court in Germany said iPhone can be locked.. Luckily France didn't go on that.

I believe handsets in Belgium must be sold unlocked too. If and when the iPhone is sold there they should be unlocked.

Do you mean how much it will cost to buy an iPhone outside the U.S.? Given the exchange rates with the dollar I wouldn't recommend it unless one must have it unlocked. The pound is just shy of $2 and the euro isn't far behind.

| | I'm thinking the same thing, even though you'd still get hit with activation and first month (since AT&T doesn't prorate). I'm thinking my wife will be going with AT&T though to get the 3G, and I'll just have to ETF her T-Mobile, or ride it out for 9 more months (or use it myself and dump my old VZW account).

As a guide, the PAYG version of the iPhone should be around £300 or so. Unfortunately it won't be unlocked, but if it is being sold on similar terms unlocked then one can probably expect to pay a similar amunt for it, if not more.
