Default Base Wireless - Belgium

How is the coverage in Central and Western Belgium (maybe near Tournai, I don't know exactly where I'll be yet - all I know is it's in the French part of the country) with i-Mode over Base Wireless? Thanks!

Generally speaking you should not have a problem, unless you're in a very remote area, but even those are pretty much covered by european providers.
check out gsmworld.com for coverage maps and information.
Hope this helps,
Andy

Coverage in Belgium is pretty reliable in most areas. I traveled through Belgium from the UK to Germany. I remember losing the signal a few times between Brussels and Liege when traveling on Eurostar. In any case, you should be able to roam on Proximus or Mobistar if you plan on using your American number. Otherwise all I can say is take the best pick and you should be fine.

How was Eurostar? I'm trying to find a train to go to Milan while I'm there to visit someone in Italy and don't know who to choose.

And thanks for the advice. I tried looking at Proximus and Mobistar a couple weeks ago and they didn't have too much information on their website. Plus I wanted i-Mode so Base was the best choice for me. Thanks again!

European train service works quite well. The trains are clean and punctual.

If you need to change trains en route, I would suggest that you locate the platform from which you will depart as soon you arrive. Some stations have very clear directions, whereas others do not.

There are a few possibilities to get to Milan. You could go from Brussels via Paris down through Southern France or go Brussels-Köln (Thalys), Köln-Stuttgart (ICE) and from Stuttgart take the Cisalpino train (runs daily if I'm not mistaken) directly to Milan. If you want a direct connection, you may have to go through France.

The Eurostar is quite a cool way to travel between London and Brussels. It took about 3 hours and the route runs from London via Devon through the Chunnel to Calais and Lille all the way to Brussels. You get a lot of scenic views as you leave the UK and speed through France.

It's best to look at a Eurail Pass if you plan on taking trains throughout Germany, Belgium, France and Italy.

BASE is not a bad choice, E-Plus in Germany also has i-mode even though I don't use it myself. As you may know, i-mode was developed by NTT DoCoMo:

Yes I know it's from NTT DoCoMo, I found out about it while looking at phones available in Japan. I first learned about i-Mode on Italian carriers (I don't remember which carrier is was, maybe TIM or Vodafone). But then I was told that I was going to Belgium instead so I looked into BASE, which was the only Belgian cellular site that showed phones. Also, ever since I read about i-Mode on NTT's site, I was thinking that they should branch into America.

But thanks for the Train reccommendations! I was looking into those passes and they go only from $200-$500... on first class!

Well it turns out I won't even be going to Belgium, lol. Instead, I will be living in Brazil from August to June/July! I'll have to do some research with their carriers before I post some morequestions.

Brazil??

Wow.

That sounds pretty cool Gideon.

You will still have to write up a review for us when you get back or while you are down there if you have access to a computer.

I'll just bring my laptop. But I'll have to look for power and phone line adapters...

At least this time I actually know where I'm going: the Sao Paulo area. There are a ton of wireless carriers there, too

You'll be fine with any GSM 1800-capable handset since that is the only band that the national GSM providers operate on. The regional providers use both 900/1800.

Here are all the links you need:

Well I figured that if TIM is the best in Italy, it could be the best in Sao Paulo (odd branching-out they have). Any good or bad reviews with them? And for a phone I was looking at the Pantech G500.
