If you're in Australia then clearly 011 will not work as that's what you use in the US. You can do the +1 as dmapr suggested or you can use the Australian international dialling code which is 0011. (Be careful when you dial that, by the way. 000 is the emergency number in Australia, like our 911.) So for a number (408) 555-1212 in the US you would either dial +1-408-555-1212 or 0011-1-408-555-1212.
