Teacher wants ban on Cell towers near schools in Ireland

I see the whole "Health" reason's for cell towers not to be installed is used in other countries as well. It will be interesting to see how this pan's out for them in Ireland.

Irish Teachers Call for Ban on Mobile Masts near Schools

The President of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO), Denis Bohane, addressing the union's Annual Congress in Cork has attacked mobile phone operators for erecting mobile phone masts near primary schools without any thought for the health and safety of the children. "There is no concern for the children who are obliged by the state to attend school or the teachers who work in them," he said.

The INTO leader said he wanted regulation enacted quickly in relation to this which would ban the situating of phone masts near schools. He also said that there was a need to have an independent agency to measure the effects of radiation from these masts. "Taking data from the companies themselves is like asking Jaws if it is safe to go back in the water," he said.

"There is strong evidence from around the world of health risks associated with exposure to electric and magnetic fields and electromagnetic radiation," he said. "Recent studies show that people within 300 meters of mobile phone base stations suffer fatigue, headaches, concentration difficulties, depression, memory loss, visual and hearing disruptions, irritability, skin problems and dizziness."

Mr Bohane told delegates to the conference in Cork that data from the World Health Organization (WHO) is being used by providers to claim that these masts are safe.

"That data is out of date," he said, "and even when it was undertaken in 2000 the health effects were not fully researched." He said exposure guidelines proposed by the WHO are based only on short-term effects. "They are not designed to protect from long-term effects. Because children's bodies are developing and research is not complete on the long term health effects we should be even more cautious in allowing masts to be erected where children spend considerable amounts of time.

"Individuals have a choice whether to use a mobile phone or not. With a phone mast near a school, children have no choice." he concluded.

What is wrong with these people? Apparently they would rather believe paranoid urban legends than use a little common sense.

Wait until a kid gets hit by a car or there is some other incident in the area surrounding a school and people can't call an ambulance on their mobile phones.

I know I've ranted about this before, but there are known health and safety effects of poor coverage. People have died because of a lack of coverage and people have been saved due to good coverage.

What about the very high powered TV and radio stations that have been operating for decades with no apparent negative health effects? How about the microwave ovens and other gadgets that contribute RF indoors?

Maybe we should ban all that stuff and wait for the W.H.O. to definitively prove that there are no adverse effects. But we'll be waiting a long time because it's pretty much impossible to prove a negative assertion.

The funny thing is that if kids were not so capacity needy, carriers would not have to put panels near a school, just to keep up with the demand.

When my local high school gets out, the T-Mobile would always overload, until they added a low, small site right by the high school.

No, it's true. Antennas destroyed a small Swiss village, even causing cows to miscarriage! But it's nothing that a little "Biometerics" can't cure

In June 2002 when the Swisscom started the operation of a 710-watt mobile radiocommunications antenna in the tower of the Roman Catholic church, which is under monument protection, in the Togenburger community of Hemberg, it was the end of the peaceful life in the village. The antenna radiation effects soon went beyond a better mobile telephone reception: About two dozen residents complained from sleeplessnesses, headaches, fear or depressions. These "biometric forms" were just CD's that people hung in their homes. They were told they absorbed the harmful RF. And immediately after hanging these in their homes they felt better, the birds were singing again, and all was well. Just goes to show that these "symptoms" were just in the minds of the people.

Of course everything is just in the people's minds. IF people don't know the installation is there, you will not hear any complaints, but as soon as people hear about an installation that just went on the air, everything turns bad. Funny, seriously.

...actually, in most cases people allready complain of headaches, depression, etc. only when the antenna is built. Swisscom has to tell them that the antenna isn't even radiating yet!
