Dear friends, I would like to know the cellular modes in EU, for example i know there is GSM900 in EU and it works under 890-915 / 935-960 MHz. However, is there any other? It would be helpful if you could state the modes with their operating frequency bands as well as with government link as support. Thanks for your help in advance. Regards, FLS |

For GSM voice service, Europe uses GSM900 and GSM1800. For UMTS DATA they use the 2100 Mhz band over there. There are also some 450 Mhz CDMA networks in some parts I believe. |

I see. So, does it imply that only GSM900 and GSM1800 are available and no such CDMA2000, CDMA2000 1X or 3G adopted in EU? Thanks, FLS Last edited by FLS; 05-11-2006 at 6:06 AM. |

There are some CDMA networks in some parts but not in Western Europe/most tourist countries. Check out http://www.cdg.org/worldwide/index.asp Some CDMA networks in Europe, albeit 3g are on 450 Mhz frequency. Hope this helps. |

450MHz CDMA is being considered in rural areas in the Iberian peninsula and Central/Eastern Europe if memory serves me right, primarily due to the low cost of infrastructure. I haven't kept up on how this deployment is going.

May I know what's by meant of "UMTS DATA"?? Does it means that it limits to data transmission within that bands only and can't provide VOICE service? Thanks. FLS | |

UMTS stands for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System. It is a 3G mobile phone technology that uses W-CDMA as the underlying telephony standard. UMTS and WCDMA are often used interchangeably in popular parlance although as the previous sentence indicates, doing so is not technically correct. Anyway, to answer your question, voice calls can be carried over UMTS but the main application is data because of the increased bandwidth.

All European 3G/UMTS voice/data (meaning regular voice calls/video calls and 3G/UMTS data usage) is carried in the 1900-1920 (uplink) Mhz and 2110-2170 (downlink) Mhz bands. Most GSM/3G/UMTS antennas in Germany are manufactured by Kathrein: http://www.kathrein.de/en/mca/catalo...d/99810314.pdf (13 MB)
