I'm planning on taking an epic trip in my Land Cruiser through Central and South America. I'd like to set up a tracking system in my truck using this nifty design: http://wiki.ehow.com/Make-a-Smart-Ca...a-Mobile-Phone I'm trying ot figure out how to set this tracking system up for my mega-international trip. I imagine I will need a quadband phone but I'm not sure what type of service and sim card to get. Is there a service/sim card combination that will allow me to roam anywhere in Central and South America as long as I have a quadband phone? I would just need to be able to receive calls. Or would I need to get a new sim card in each country? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks! Last edited by Southbound; 04-02-2006 at 10:11 PM. |

Either T-Mobile or Cingular would probably fit your needs as they are GSM carriers and will roam anywhere in the world, and yes, with a Quad Band phone you will be fine. T-Mobile's website is www.t-mobile.com and their international rates and coverage maps can be found on http://www.t-mobile.com/Internationa..._RoamWorldwide Cingular's roaming information can be found here: http://www.cingular.com/customer_service/roaming_gen T-Mobile usually offers you more minutes for your money and internationally, both carriers will offer you broad internation roaming capabilities. Hope this helps. Just be aware that if you are going to be using your phone while down there, expect a hefty bill when you get back. |

I use Cingular with the World Traveler plan. It gives a lower rate per minute than just roaming regularly. You need a quad band phone You need international calling enabled on the account You need international roaming enabled on the account You can get the World Connect/World Traveler plans to help decrease the cost of roaming. |
