South Korea is currently testing EV-DV for a fall upgrade. As for GSM I believe the numbers are small for both countries, for South Korea it's something like 80% CDMA 20% GSM.

Japan already has 3G/UMTS service but it is quite a bit ahead of what we understand by 3G in Europe and now in the US. Since the European 3G/UMTS networks use the same frequency as the Japanese 3G networks (one compatible provider supposedly is Vodafone Japan using 2100 Mhz), you can use a European UMTS phone in Japan. The US 3G/UMTS network runs at 1900 Mhz for now so it wouldn't be compatible. I hope I answered your question, if not, then it's worth the try anyway

The ROK has 0% GSM, same as Japan. Neither country has wireless service of any kind on the EuroAsian GSM frequencies (900/1800). If you include 800 MHz as a GSM frequency (850 in the Americas for GSM), then both have it but the service is 100% CDMA 1xRTT/EV-DO in Korea and PDC, and CDMA 1xRTT/EV-DO in Japan. Both countires do have wCDMA service. Japan, in fact, has the most wCDMA subs of any country. Korea has wCDMA, but very few subs since itwas launched in late 2003.

With Japan, I knew that they were CDMA but the wireless carriers lock their phones so that they can't be used anywhere. I tried getting one from Japan two years ago and was told that it wouldn't work when I visited Akihabara.

Wow regular GSM at 900/1800? My guess is that they will overlay their current towers with the needed GSM equipment. Where did you find this info?

SK Telecom, LGT and KTF offer rental GSM phones for outbound roaming. There are also dualmode handsets from LG and Samsung that work on either wCDMA or CDMA2000.

There is no GSM in South Korea... and Bugwart is right, South Korea uses the 800 and 1700 MHz bands, CDMA only.
