A good friend of mine is going to study abroad in Cairo next year for a semester and wants to get a cell phone to call home and use around Cairo and perhaps the rest of Egypt as well. What are his options and what would you guys suggest?

Judging from GSMWorld.com, it looks like he has a choice between Vodafone Egypt and ECMS-MobilNil. He should get a GSM 900 phone and if he needs a model that works back home too, then a triband phone would do the trick. If he's going to make lots of calls, then getting an Egyptian prepaid SIM would be a good idea, I just don't know if incoming calls are free like here in Europe.

    Egyptian providers

It depends on where you go and if you have the chance to use a Vodafone network in the country you're going to. Looking at Vodafone's Roaming site, I would say that choosing a Vodafone network abroad is cheaper than roaming on a non-Vodafone network in a country where you have a choice.

Here is the different cost charts:

Pay as You Talk (Prepaid) Roaming Costs
    Pay Monthly Roaming Costs
Vodafone World Roaming with International Call Saver

    Vodafone World GPRS Roaming

    And Vodafone's Int'l Roaming Site:

    Vodafone UK's Roaming Site
