Default Wireless Service in HK

Wow. I knew Hong Kong's wireless market was supercompetitive but I didn't know it was THAT great for consumers.

I am going to Hong Kong in October and will need a local number while I'm there... so I started doing some research and came up with the following from 3 (formerly Orange, formerly Hutchinson) for PRE-PAID, i.e., rechargeable airtime:

All calls HK$0.30 (US$0.04) per minute base airtime.
IDD (International Direct Dial) to the US, peak hours: HK$1.28 (US$0.16)/min
IDD (International Direct Dial) to the US, off-peak: HK$0.33 (US$0.04)/min

But, because Hong Kong is on the other side of the world, the off-peak is 5pm Sunday-Thursday to 5am Monday-Friday!

Also, you can use your Hong Kong SIM card anywhere in the world. It's expensive (HK$7.52/US$0.96 per minute to call locally and HK$10.79/US$1.38 per minute to call back to HK), but it's possible.

Wow.

Just wow.

When in HK airport check out the Virtu,or is it Vertu, booth among the candy stands; just before security.
I did not see many buyers or browsers in the stand, but there it was.
I notice Phonescoop does not list those phones.
Pretty girl will answer your questions. That is service with a smile.

By Vertu, do you mean the high end Vertu by Nokia?

I got myself a "dual-band" (i.e., 2.5G and 3G) SIM from 3, formerly Orange, formerly Hutchinson Telecom. 1968+1+AC+7 digits works beautifully. A little latency compared to 00+1+AC+7 digits, but the sound quality is good, the price is unbeatable, and the coverage is a wireless geek's wet dream.

Time for lunch...

Did you use the SIM in your V600 or did you have to get a new phone since you mentioned that it's 3G capable?

I used it in my V600 and I'm only using the 2.5G capabilities.
