Default GSM/Internet Traffic

I am doing some research and I am having trouble finding the answer to this question, "Explain how GSM network passes Internet traffic to cell phones?". I have found how it transfers voice over, but nothing on Internet traffic. Unless I am missing the boat and could use how it passes data.
