Default European SIMS

While in Germany last month, I hoped to save a few bucks by buying a Vodafone SIM. My thinking was I would use the number for incoming calls, incoming free; right? My plan worked, talk all the time, no usage on my prepaid minutes. Had to go to Italy for three days, someone called. When you are out of your country, you on roam; expensive roam. More dough than using your U.S. phone on roam. It was like a slot machine, in two minutes or less I heard a beep and my carefully hoarded minutes were gone, vapor. Damn!
I was dead in the field. I couldn't top up that SIM until I was back in Germany and received a few complaints about people getting a German message which I am sure said something like this deadbeat hasn't paid his bill.

I did save money buying that SIM, had people call me on it before I left, and after I returned to, Germany.

I did learn that even on Vodafone, if you go out of your calling area, you pay for incoming calls.

I still have my German Vodafone SIM. My few remaining minutes will soon expire, can this expired SIM be reactivated next year or is it tossable? I would read the info that came with my Call Ya package, but it is in German and that is not a language I am familiar with.

There's usually an expiration time, after which the sim is dead. From my experiences with Singtel and Smart in Asia, the period was around 3 months. If you know you'll be going back to Germany, you may want to have someone there top it off for you.

One thing to always remember is that if you take a prepaid SIM outside of its native country, be sure to take enough refill cards with you. Once you're outside of the native network's country, you will be charged for incoming calls. The reason why the roaming charges are so high is because the native provider and the roaming provider charge you more since you are using another provider's services. They may also levy a roaming tax which is applied on top of the roaming rate for an outgoing/incoming call.

The principle behind charging roamers for incoming calls is because the person calling them cannot know that the cell phone being called is outside of the country. So someone has to be charged and in this case, it will be the end user: the person abroad. The person calling the roamer pays for the call to the national border and from there, the rest of the call charges are levied on the roamer from the national border to the country they are roaming in.

Now in terms of D2Call Ya, it is possible for you to refill the Call Ya account with a Vodafone refill card from a native Vodafone provider in the following countries:

Ägypten/Egypt
Australien/Australia
Frankreich/France
Griechenland/Greece
Großbritannien/UK
Irland/Republic of Ireland
Italien/Italy
Kroatien/Croatia
Malta/Malta
Neuseeland/New Zealand
Niederlanden/The Netherlands
Österreich/Austria
Portugal/Portugal
Schweden/Sweden
Slowenien/Slovenia
Spanien/Spain
Ungarn/Hungary

So what you do is go to a Vodafone Shop in any of the above countries, buy one of their refill cards and then do this:

Dial 22 9 22 on your phone and proceed through the prompts to refill your account.

There is a 2 Euro charge for this which is deducted automatically but at least your account will be refilled. In Italy this charge is already incorporated into the refill amount so if you buy a 10 Euro refill card from Vodafone Omnitel, you pay 2 Euros for this service.

You must refill your account in the host country's Vodafone network while you are there, you cannot refill with a Vodafone UK card in Germany for example .

Now for your original question:

You can be reached for 15 months after your last refill has expired. Each time you refill your account with 25 Euros or more, your Call Ya account is automatically extended for another 15 months (meaning the 25 Euros remain valid for 1 1/4 years). If you recharge with 15 Euros, your Call Ya account is extended for another 9 months.

Honestly your best bet would be to consider getting a Vodafone UK SIM card since you can recharge that account with a Vodafone refill card from other Vodafone networks as well. The prompts are all in English though so you may have an easier time with that.

Hope this info helps ,

Cheers and let me know if you have more questions ,

You sure know a lot about wireless carriers in Germany. Why did you choose E-Plus? It's a little cheaper, isn't it.
Well I am late, as always, and so someone else already explained everything, but you said everthing I was gonna say. Thanks.
By the way, I have a German Vodafone and E-Plus Prepaid Card, a Swisscom Mobile Prepaid Card and an Airtel-Vodafone Prepaid Card.
So, I read you're gonna move to Koln in 2004...may I ask why? I was born in Ulm, in Southern Germany.

Das ist ja interessant . I'm German-American since I was born in California near San Francisco. My dad was born in Ellwangen (besser gesagt seine Eltern kommen auch aus der Gegend, nämlich Rölingen) and my mom was born in Cologne. I speak both German (first language) and English fluently and I studied at the University of Maryland in Schwäbisch Gmünd from 2000-2002 at which time it had to close due to financial problems. At the moment I'm in my last semester of college at an American university in London. But all of my relatives live either in Köln or in the Ellwangen area so I go to Germany very frequently during the year. I hope to work in the media field in Köln since that is where RTL and WDR are based as well as the regional studios for VOX, SAT1 and ProSieben (I believe).

Anyway to get back on track here, I've used E-Plus since I started studying in Germany in 2000 and I still use E-Plus when I come back to Germany. Their coverage is excellent throughout Germany even in the rural areas like Schwäbisch Gmünd, Murrhardt, Aalen, Neresheim etc .

It's always great to meet another person who knows Southern Germany. Are you German as well?

Cheers

Yep, I'm a German-American as well. I was born in Ulm, and now live in the States.
E-Plus coverage is very good as long as you have service, no system busies or problems at all. But comparing coverage maps and actually traveling a lot in Germany, I can say that Vodafone D2 fits me best, covering everywhere I need a phone and covering more than E-Plus. I also still have an E-Plus Prepaid SIM and use it when I'm in Germany, and yes, coverage is very good, just not as solid in some places than Vodafone.
Just curious: You still have a Cingular phone, even though you spend most of your time in Europe?
The media field is something very interesting, and I always used to watch SAT 1 Blitz, and I believe they were located in Koln.
E-Plus service works very well in Aalen as well. I often visited the airfield in Aalen since I'm a pilot.
Freut mich auch sehr, jemanden kennen gelernt zu haben, der sich auch gut in Sueddeutschland auskennt. Bist Du schonmal in Ulm gewesen?

Lol no I haven't been in Ulm, I went through there 2 years to get to Füssen with some friends of mine from the now-defunct Schwäbisch Gmünd campus.

No I got my phones unlocked here in the UK. At the moment, it's the Nokia N-Gage and the Motorola V525. The 5100 is back home in the US being used by my youngest brother on Cingular to keep my KIC Prepaid number active.

Schau mal wieder hier rein, speaking about Germany with other people is great .

Or send me a PM over on HoFo, my name over there is Triband81 as you may already now. I love Vodafone by the way, I might port over to D2 once I move back to Germany in May.

Ya, ich habe die Deutsche Staatsbuergerschaft, lebe aber jetzt in den Staaten(Utah, leider lol).
you know, you can't go wrong with D2 in Germany. I've used all of them in Germany, especially in the South, and D2 is just very, very strong. I've never had a busy network message while there.
Anyways, I've been and am quite busy, but I'll for sure PM you, and yeah, I know you are Triband on Hofo

Andy
