Default USA phone in Canada

Hi,
I lost my Rogers Canada phone and now av a NOKIA 5165 that was used in the USA on th AT and T network. Is there anyway I can get to use this phone on my current Rogers contract? If I avail myslef of the Rogers used phone service I have to sign up for an additional year. I did not want to do that.
If I have to so be it but I thought I would see if anyone knows anything out there. I am in the greater Toronto area so can go somewhere if necessary.
I am in the market for new phones for my wife and myself since our FIDO reception is no good. If someone out there can solve my current problem I am prepared to get at least 2 more phones.
The new phones I would like should have a long talk time, hold their chargeicon for a long time and work in the USA,Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal area as well. The phones should be quite small as well.
Thanks for your help

Not if its TDMA. If you purchase a TDMA phone from the states like the Nokia 5165 it will not work on Roger's the only way you can get an American phone to work on Roger's is if it is a GSM phone then it will work fine as long as its unlocked.

Check EBAY for unlocked GSM phones, and pick one its sure to work, and EBAY has a large selection, but remember make sure its unlocked.

Also, make sure it supports 1900 MHz, which is Rogers' frequency... and as usual, buyer beware.

Yes that's also true, just to make your life easier so you don't have to worry about frequencies, just buy a tri band phone.

If I'm not mistaken Rogers has started rolling out 850 GSM is some markets. If so I would recommend a dual band phone such as Nokia 3595 or 6590i that supports both 850/1900.

Remember...a tri-band world phone will not support 850.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure that the only American phones that will work on Roger's are GSM. I do not think a TDMA phone from the the states is going to work here. Don't get me wrong I know that we use TDMA in Canada, however there is something about the American TDMA system that differs from Canada's.

Why do you think that american TDMA phones can't operate in your local networks? I live in Russia and all phones from USA works great in our AMPS/TDMA networks (if they are unlocked :-&gt

I am thinking about buying a T720 that wsa origanaly used on the Verizonicon System. I was wondering if my CDMA service provider here in Canada would be able to unlock my Verizonicon phone or will i need to buy codes. Does anyone know Verizonicon unlock codes?

Verizonicon don't lock their phones. Just use SPC code 000000

Telus will not activate a phone if it's not theirs.

Bell activate cell phones that are not sold by them, but will activate them as analog phones. The phone will work on Bell's CDMA network, but you will not get digital features like SMS.

Yes Verizonicon Does Lock their phones, trust me I have had to retrieve many lock codes from Verizonicon because they do not have a default 000000 SPC

and another thing is Verizonicon phones generally will work just fine on Bell, I have activated phones on Bell from Verizonicon, and I have got every feature including the WAP Browser, and SMS, However this is not always the case.
