I am heading off to Costa Rica in August and want cellular coverage while I'm out there. I currently have Verizon...I noticed now AT&T offers roaming for Costa Rica (nobody in the US did a month ago). I dont want to activate service through AT&T because AT&T GSM is very spotty in Maine. Any ideas? Is there a prepaid method or something I could do?

i am from there, and currently there is no prepaid service. form some unknown reason, when GSM service came out, not a single prepaid line was activated. they say it is comming out, but nothing. about roaming: with verizon it is impossible, because the country has no CDMA, which is what verizon uses. what you would need is a GSM phone that has the 1800Mhz frequency. you could use an ATT phone for that, now tht ATT has roming over there. you could also use TDMA, but it is dieing in costa rica, i dont know how the service is now. GSM has almost double the customers over there than TDMA. here is how GSM covers the country: http://www.grupoice.com/swf/mapa_cob..._cober_GSM.swf have a nice trip! pura vida

I just bought a Mobal phone off of Ebay, the Nokia model that has 900 and 1800... Although Costa Rica isn't listed as on of their countries, I'm hoping I might come upon a network that might let me make a credit card call. My spanish is alright so I might be able to pull that off... |

GSM works differently than CDMA, you can either register on the network(and hence use it) or you can't register at all, finished; which means you cannot make Credit Card Calls either...someone correct me if I'm wrong. | |
