Default Porting a TracFone number from TracFone

Has anyone ported a TracFone number from TracFone to another carrier like Verizon, or T-Mobile?

If so, were there any complications and what was provided as proof that the phone number being ported was yours?

I tried to port my TDMA TracFone number over to Cingular, but the guy in the Cingular store said that they don't port numbers over from pre-paid plans. I don't know if thats true, but I didn't really care and just got a new number.

The VZW site indicates the TracFone's number CAN be ported over.

So you should be good to go if you want to take your number somewhere else...

But...I read elsewhere when someone with a Cingular-activated TracFone tried to port the number elsewhere, the new carrier told the customer that TracFone told them the phone number was rented and therefore could not be ported.

I remember you saying that but I'd think that the VZW database checks for the exact number you entered, so you should be able to port it, at least to VZW(you should be able to, especially since the phone operates on VZW network and they probably use VZW prefixes).

Default Re: Porting a TracFone number from TracFone

I checked one of the web sites that displays which carrier is assigned the exchange and for the TracFone in question, it came up as Cellco (dba Verizon), and a call to 611 with the phone results in a "Welcome to Verizon Wireless" recording.

Verizon (in an e-mail) indicated that if the phone number is being ported from another prepaid, they may ask for additional information.

Since it's technically a Verizon number issued to TracFone, that would have been ported back to Verizon itself, I don't see where there might be a problem.

T-Mobile is working out very well, and (I think) I have managed to get a colleague to switch from Verizon (due to phone issues) to T-Mobile, but he went to one of the dealers, I told him to go to one of the stores directly.
