I wanted to put up a poll to see if people are thinking about a Motorola DROID for their next phone. I'm past two years on my VZW phone, so I voted option #3. I'm considering it. FYI, Verizon's DROID page.

I chose option three. I just bought a HTC Touch Pro2 so I will not be upgrading again until the contract is close to being up (late next year). I may consider Android in the future.

I'm due for my NE2 upgrade on the 25th. I've been considering the Touch Pro 2 primarily, but I am also interested in the Droid. The Droid Eris is another possibility along with the LG Chocolate Touch (as I've had great success with the LG Voyager for nearly two years). I'm not too keen on the $350 ETF for the Droid, Eris, and likely the TP2 (if purchased after 11/15, which would be the case for me, regardless of what I get) even though I've been with Verizon forever and don't plan on leaving. My only issue with the Droid is that it's a Motorola smartphone, which brings up unpleasant memories of the horrid 1st gen. Q, which I loathed. I know the Moto Droid is a completely different phone, but it's still a Moto smartphone. Can't say I trust Motorola smartphones anymore. I want to see how the Droid fares with early adopters to see what problems might occur. If all goes well, I may seriously consider it. The exciting thing is there are a lot of awesome phone choices out now. So I'm really looking forward to this next upgrade.

I voted no since I have no desire to pay a mandatory data fee just to own the phone. Besides, I am not eligible to upgrade from my current phone until next year.

I voted maybe. I have been thinking about picking up the CLIQ through T-Mobile, waiting to here more news on the HD2. I can't justify going or adding Verizon to get a Android device though.

I wasn't too clear in mine, by "appropriate" I meant the GSM frequencies that I require, quad band GSM and 850/1900/2100 3G at a minimum. Ideally I would like to have one with 850/900/1700/1800/1900/2100 3G. I am dissapointed that Motorola is producing a Euro version and not an International version, I hope this is not going to be a trend. Quote:

I would love to pick it up. If Verizon were not nearly double my Sprint bill, I would make the switch.

I like Motorola, but I've become very fond of WIndows Mobile. Although I just picked up a new phone recently (HTC Pure) I can actually get an upgrade on my account in about a year. At this point it would have to be a fantastic device to pull me away from Win Mobile and HTC. -Jay

I got a hands on with the Droid this weekend for about an hour, my brother in law is with Verizon and went down and got one. It's pretty slick, I like the keyboard better on the G1 as it is bigger. It was pretty smooth though. Same problem as all HTC android phones....battery battery battery. But good job Motorola it's not a bad device bigger screen than my g1.

I voted No, but you'd probably would have guessed that anyway. Okay looking phone, a little plain though. I thought on another thread we were remarking how the high end Verizon smart phones are becoming 'world' phones, with CMDA and GSM sim slots. I guess this Droid is not one of them since it is only for USA Verizon. If I was head of marketing at ATT...I take this 'iphone' killer and show the world wide maps on where both phones work. Then I'd pan the ad video to Paris and show a guy holding the Verizon Droid and holding a fold out paper map of Paris, and the confused look on his face. Then the voice over would say, " Need Google maps in Paris? There's a phone for that- on ATT" Seriously though I do have to wonder about all the phone mgfr starting to make Android phones. I think that Apple has demonstrated pretty well with it's Mac and now iPhone, that having the same company make the software and hardware, gives the best integration and smoothness of operation. Just my opinion. Just not sure why Verizon/motorola didn't make this very high end phone one of their world phones.

Looks like the consensus so far is "no". As cool as the phone may be, I've never believed the hype stating it's the latest "iPhone killer". Reviews have been mostly positive, but I'm still taking a "wait and see" approach.

Hey Mike...I've been considering a "Droid" as well through Verizon, though I'm leaning towards the HTC-Eris, #1 because it's cheaper ($99 w/2-yr) versus a $100 bucks more for the Motorola. Also heard from others that the operating system is typically Motorola slow. For that reason, I've not been a big fan of Moto phones. Also, compared to the Eris, it's a lot heavier/bulkier. The only thing about the Eris I heard is that they only put in Android 1.5 OS...though it maybe be eligible for upgrades later. Just think HTC makes a better phone, but that's just my personal opinion. Chris

I picked up a Droid yesterday. Switched from the Storm. Love it. I will say it is just as good, and better in some regards, than the iPhone which I have also used previously. However, it will never get the traction of the iPhone but I am hoping the Adroid OS will take off. I like the open source.
