With the Palm Pre launch hitting in days, I thought it would be interesting to see who here plans on picking one up. I have a feeling that I am not the only one. I will have to say, Palm & Sprint did a real nice job keeping this thing hyped up, as most people like me want this phone, without ever even seeing it in person!

I'd like to get one but that it is going to require a plan that I can't afford.

Without a doubt! I'll be ordering one on the launch date. I got a Palm Centro in March of 2007 with a new contract (Ported from Cingular? or was it at&t? I don't remember) so I'm eligible for the two year discount. I'm hoping my Blackberry Curve will fetch about $130ish on eBay. If that's the case, I'll only be out $75ish and some change to get it. |

I completely understand about being bummed on having to change your plan. I was "forced" to switch from my $30 SERO to the $70 everything data and I was very bitter about it. Ultimately, I can't complain... the service is excellent and it's MUCH cheaper than anything AT&T or VZW offers.

I will be picking one up as soon as I can. Lucky for me I don't have to switch plans.

I'll be giving the Pre a good look. My wife ended up returning her 1 week old iPhone 3G o the store to wait it out and see what the new iPhone looks like. So, we will be taking our time looking at both the Pre in a week or two, as well as anything Steve might show at WWDC and then making up our minds. Being out of contract is such a wonderful thing...

Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't you want a GSM phone for your travel overseas? As for the Pre, I am eagerly looking forward to next week. It promises to be an exciting phone. Having an aversion to sliders makes it difficult for me to want one (the GSM version), however to balance that out 3 of my co-workers are planning to port out from Verizon for the Pre next week. I would love to hear your take on the Pre having experienced *The iPhone* Please keep us posted. Palm850/v0100 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11) | |

Charlyee, we haven't made up our minds. My wife still likes the iPhone but she definitely wants the 32GB (assuming such a thing really exists, I guess we will find out in a week), so most likely we will go for that. However, who knows, if we can take a look at the Pre, maybe it would win us over. She does like the idea of having a physical keyboard. At any rate, unless the new iPhone gets jailbroken, travel overseas with it is a moot point anyway. That is one thing the iPhone 3G has going for it.

I'm glad that several people here are planning on getting the Pre, so we will get knowledgeable perspectives from real-world owners. I'm always skeptical of professional reviews, because while the reviewers have good perspective on the competition, I think they only use the phones for a few days, if that, before they write their reviews. At least for me, I only come to know a phone's real strengths and weaknesses after about a month of use. On the other hand, the user "reviews" on sites like Phonescoop, are full of snap judgments, pet peeves, idiosyncratic likes/dislikes and bad writing. At least on WA, we have a group of people who can evaluate a gadget's pros and cons pretty fairly (allowing for individual differences) and can express themselves well. SW

I still think the lack of advertising is stupid. IPhones were out of stock in many places for a short time and Apple still advertised. Ads fuel demand. Low supply also fuels demand because people want to get something that they perceive as rare or hard to get. BlackBerry8330m/4.5.0.138 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/104 |

I read a great review on AnnieNYC's (annienyc.blogger.com) blog - so there's a real world user review if you want to read one. If a GSM version comes out, I want one. |

I got to play with the Pre the other day, and I have to agree with that Annie review. I still want to get one, but need to pick up a iDen phone first.

Looking at Annie's review, her examples of multi tasking are pretty simple. They can be done with the iPhone already. Multi tasking while on the phone with calendars, addy and other native appls is already built in. Oh. Btw. I put this post together with the new cut and paste function on my iPhone. I just 'love' reviewers that don't know what they write about!!! Oh and of course with AT&T you can 'talk' and browse the web at the same time. "Wow, run several apps at one time! You don't know how handy this is until you have the option. Let's say you're talking on the phone with someone, they want the date or addy of the function, just minimize them, bring up your calendar and go back to them while never closing your phone screen. Being able to have several applications open is the freakin' bomb. It makes other phones look down right clunky *cough*iPhone*cough*. Oh yeah, and this includes the phone as an app too. So you can talk on the phone while running your other applications. Perfect example, i called Time Warner and schedule a technition and while i had her on speaker phone and wrote down the time/date in the calender, and the confirmation number in the notes.

Um yeah, that's a very poor example of multi-tasking by that review. Let's take, for example, what I did today. I was using telenav GPS with text to speach navigation while streaming music on pandora in the background. All this can be done, while running ANY other program on the phone. When using GPS and pandora, I can open up the browser and go to google, or open up fandango and look up a movie time, and alter my destination back in telenav. Now THATS multi-tasking. |

I agree that is real multi tasking. But not Annie's examples. Just setting the record straight. You can browse the web and talk on the phone with sprints 3G? I mean not using wifi? Oh and you Can run GPSwhile running the iPod on the iPhone too.

And it's not a great idea to be doing all things while driving anyway. Tom Tom is being approved in the Appl store now. It will have turn by turn. Plus the new iphone will have text to spoken for all if it's functions for the visually impaired. But back on point; I was just correcting Annie's article because the examples were not correct about what the iPhone cannot do. I was not commenting on the Pre's multi tasking. But seriously the most useful multi tasking are phone calling + data retrieval (web, contacts, calendar) all of which exists in the iPhone from day one.
