Default A 'Heroes' funny

If anyone followed the show on Monday when Matt was deposited in Africa he asks the guy that he meets if he can use his cellphone. The guy says "we don't have good reception here you have to use Sprint!!!!" Well, Sprint wouldn't work in Africa anyway, but the real reason he mentioned Sprint is guess why? Well, perhaps it's because Sprint is a big sponsor

I saw this mentioned on another wireless forum. Others said the Sprint reference is partially correct since Sprint International would work (provided you have a CDMA/GSM device). In a past epsiode, they were in Ireland and one of the characters had a Sprint CDMA Razr and was using it in Ireland. That was very funny.

But it is still incorrect that you couldn't get Sprint since Sprint does not work in Africa. You could of course use a roaming network, but that's not the same as your own network.

Exactly. If Sprint is roaming then they're not the only phones that work out there.

That is true, but I took a different meaning from the other forum. Since the device would still be a Sprint branded phone even though it is both CDMA and GSM it is technically still a "Sprint" device even though it would not be using Sprint's network. On the other forum, others were mentioning since they did not flat out say "you should have used Sprint's network", and instead said "you have to use Sprint' then there it is still partially correct since you would technically be "using" Sprint (in this case a Sprint device using their International Roaming partner network). You would also most likely be under contract with Sprint so you are "using" Sprint but roaming on a completely different network (in this case a GSM network). I still agree with you and they should of said something else since their comment was completely false.

It's implied that it's the Sprint network which is the only network that works "out there." Sprint may have roaming agreements with many different networks in many different countries, but the actual networks are whichever roaming network they're using. It's not the Sprint network any more than it's the AT&T or the Alltel network.

Using a "Sprint" device does not in any way mean that you are using Sprint if you are using someone else's network. Actually, there really is no "Sprint" device since Sprint doesn't even manufacture handsets. A brand or a logo on a piece of equipment does not mean that it's a Sprint device unless you want to argue semantics.

I should have left that part out since I see your point. There is still very slim possibility to this since if you had Sprint (and a contract with them) you would still be considered using Sprint (even though you would be roaming on a GSM network and thus not using their own network) since the international roaming partner charges would be put on your Sprint bill. I know this is not the same, but this is what I took away after reading different forums out there when they commented on this gaffe. I will not go any further since your statement is definitely correct and I agree with you and do not want to start an argue match.
