I like to use cables because I have organised crime problems http://endmafia.com
I heard that wireless is never 100% safe, is that true?

How about this... Nothing is ever 100% safe. Take water for example. You cannot live without it, yet you can drown in as little as a few inches of it.

What "wireless" are you referring to? WiFi? 3G? Bluetooth?

3G is pretty tough to crack, it has good encryption, plus 3G scanners are not so commonly available.

WiFi is easy to crack if you use WEP or no encryption. If you use WPA2 with a good, unique password (ex: !eiUj49&rTz1@5Qw) , you're pretty safe, as "brute force" ie: repeatedly guessing the password, is the only way to crack it.

I don't use Bluetooth, but I think the encryption is something similar to wifi, or maybe weaker?

Fixed-line DSL isn't that safe and can be hacked into also by the way Maybe even more vounerable than wireless, since most ADSL conenctions are left on 24-hours a day and can be scanned and accessed by anyone in the world. Wireless connections are only usually used briefly then turned off. Plus if someone wants to hack you on the wireless layer, they need to be within physical range of your signal.

PS-I hope you have a firewall and anti-virus enabled? If you go to the wrong web-site or download the wrong program, your PC can be hijacked, regardless of if you connected by wireless or fixed-line access ...and if you're worried about mafia, I think thats what you need to be more concerned about. Most mafia operates at that kind of level (ie: PC hijacking via software), not "war-driving" around to access peoples connections. That's too time consuming.

Well, since you're still here, could you please elaborate more on exactly what you meant by that question?

Sure. I hear from what I would consider one IT expert that they use wireless, but they are safe because they know their stuff & from another that they use a cable because It's safer. I think Radio has done a good job of pointing out why one might be considered safer than the other, for instance connections usualy on full time with cables, & detailed the safety issues very well.

I think as long as you have a good firewall, and you are running encryption on your wireless you are pretty safe. If you just plug your router in and use the defaults then you're not safe.

I think you need to know something about saftey and security for both fixed and wireless. Sounds like the "IT expert" you know who thinks cable is safer is just too lazy to learn about wireless security. Or maybe he doesn't know WPA2 has been invented in the last couple of years.

PS- What does your website have to do about wireless security? It's about human trafficing. And having lived in Eastern Europe myself for several years, I'd say most of that site sounds ficticious.

thanks jay. radio.. I'm not sure what you mean by the sounds ficticious part, I'm disappointed if that's how it comes across. I traveled directly through countries South from Finland to Poland quite quickly on foot until I recieved frost bite injuries in Poland which took a long time to heal & I was stuck there about a year in total. I finished up running out of funds for what was intened to be a pilgrimage to Israel & coming home. It's a long story & I understand if you haven't seen it all, but I put what evidence I have in a link at the bottom of the right hand menu. There have been security Issues along my way but at the moment it's my home connection I'm interested in.

Just doesn't sound like a normal trek thru Eastern Europe. But then I guess we all have different experiences and see what we choose to see. I'm sure you can find corrupt politicians and forced prostitution there in the UK as well

Quote:
TALLINN-I'd seen the corruption problem there first hand, I'd been there just 3 weeks but had twice been robbed by police.
Estonia is one of the least corrupt countries in Eastern Europe and has won alot of praise for that. Also the police are very non-agressive, especially towards Western foreigners. Not sure how you managed to get arrested/robbed twice in 1 week

...anyway, if you plan on taking on the mafia, I'd look into using proxies when contacting them or their sites, so they can't track your IP address. Some very basic info about you can be found just by clicking on their websites, for example, have a look at my site (don't worry, I won't use the info to track you, just to show you how easy it is!)
RadioRaiders System Check

I don't know much about proxies, but you can google it, or have a look here:
Proxy Ring Top Sites - Rankings - All Sites

If you are taking on the mafia, wifi security would not be at the top of my list, as they have to be pretty much right outside your door for them to tap it.

lol , OK now I see, I was still talking about Russia. I'll make it clearer now. Old Tallinn was my favourite of all the places I saw out there. I don't recal any problems there aside from some ____gies who asked to use my phone then wouldn't give it back. I'd recommend tallinn highly to all. You can get a very cheap flight there from the UK & a ferry over to Helsinki is peanuts too.
