From: Dateline presents 'Tower Dogs' - Dateline NBC - MSNBC.com Dateline presents 'Tower Dogs' A never-before-seen look at the most dangerous job in America airs Monday, July 21 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC PRESS RELEASE updated 12:03 p.m. ET, Fri., July. 18, 2008 NEW YORK - - An upcoming "Dateline Presents" takes a never-before-seen journey into the perilous world of the tower climbers who work on the frontlines of America's high-tech communications system. They scale heights of up to 2,000 feet, in all types of weather, to install, maintain, and upgrade cell phone, Internet, and broadcast towers coast to coast. And according to figures cited by OSHA, these so-called tower dogs have the highest death rate per capita of any occupation in the country. The hour-long broadcast goes up close and personal to give a no-holds-barred look at tower dogs' lives – up in the air and on the ground. We experience their on-the-job tension and watch them work hard, play hard, and mourn when they lose one of their own. In a twist on all the dangerous-job programs viewers have already seen, "Tower Dogs" follows an unusual subcontract crew boss: a woman named Nikki Collins, a single mom, former cheerleader, and the person keeping her tough-guy charges in one piece. There are approximately 9,500 tower climbers working at any given time, and they spend about 300 days per year on the road. A "Dateline" team worked with veteran tower dog Doug Delaney for four months documenting this group of tower climbers as they worked their way through 40 towns and cities in 24 states. During this time there were seven fatalities nationwide, including five deaths in a 12-day period in April. "Tower Dogs" airs on Monday, July 21 at 10:00 PM/ET. David Corvo is the executive producer.

I won't get to catch it, as I'm out here on the road right now, but my sister's (Half sister) father, and uncle own their own tower company, and I know the kind of hell and torture those men can go through. This should be an interesting watch. Hopefully I'll at least be able to catch it streaming on Hulu or NBC.com after the fact. ~*Ash*~

Glad I watched it. Every commercial break had at least 1 cell phone commercial But yeah, I got a close-up view of how dangerous this job really is. It's a point of view that many people never see, or even think about. Something I won't soon forget. For all those tower dogs out there, thank you so much for all your work.

That was a really great show. It showed us what they have to go through. I never imagined it would be that tough. I'm with everybody else. I salute you tower dogs, they do a job most people wouldn't do and risk they're lives everyday. |

After having just finished watching this program, I have the greatest respect for the men and women who do this unforgiving work. Sad to see Jonathan Guilford lose his life, especially when it was revealed it could have been avoided if he'd been following ALL safety guidelines. Cody seems like a good young man and I'm glad to see he learned some lessons. Overall this program was very well done.

I liked it overall but they could've chose a much better company to document.. Looking at from my point of view as a contractor w/ nearly 28 yrs in an industry that I've seen evolve dramatically, I'm inclined to say that Ernie "Top Hand" working for $14 per hr is well......... He wouldn't last 1 day w/ my company nor would I put up w/ the drinking/hangover. And that goes for Nikki & the others. Maybe thats why they couldn't stack that monopole in a day which is pretty damn easy, especially that type of design pole. It's amazing to see that out of all 3 or 4 of the others on that crew including Nikki the "Foreperson" that if Ernie was having probs getting the pole stacked that she herself or delegate some other member of the crew to climb up & help. It looked like to me that the other male crew members were ground hands only. I'm sorry......I'm on a rant and could go on about some other issues as well. On the other hand it does give a brief overview of a little microcosm of what goes on in the industry. On a side note: At the end where they give memoriam to the workers killed this year, they seem to forget about the hundred or so since 1980 and the countless other "TowerDogs" since the early days of radio & TV. | Not sure of an online version available, but keep an eye out for MSNBC. They air Dateline at different times. I'm sure they'll repeat this program soon.

There's only bits and pieces of it online as I stated earlier. Check out Jonathan Kramer's link in post #6. I looked in YouTube but found nothing. If anyone finds where to watch it online, please post.
