| Theres really no telling how far a signal will travel, and still remain useable. It depends on local conditions, even the weather. You should be good for 20 miles though.

It all depends. If you have a cell antenna connected to your boat and cell phone (if it is capable), you can get a signal pretty far away (you would need to consult with people familiar with these antennas). My uncle used to have Verizon and when he was out on his boat in Lake Michigan, he could make/receive calls about 7 miles away from the shore.

Depends on the Carriers really. Both CDMA and GSM have an average of 20-30 miles range but can be extended out if needed.

We've actually had interference from other sites in MI transmitting across and affecting our phones here in WI. My guess is that, depending on your carrier, you would be able to pick up signal nearly all the way across the lake. The problem you will run into is if you are on a call you will probably drop unless the carrier has those neighbors across the lake in their neighbor lists. If you are in data (aircard, etc) you probably wouldn't notice much difference.

Would it be possible that the signal can bounce off the water like skipping a rock? Would this allow for it to travel farther?

We would have Nextel sites transmitting across the lake in the Summer months. This is actually referred to as 'ducting'. To answer the question, "does the signal bounce?" The simple answer is yes, but there are factors that need to be in place. Mainly it has to do with atmospheric and weather conditions. For more info see the below link.
