I was refering to the global market in general, where EVDO is deployed in a small number of countries. EVDO doesn't have much scope to expand, indeed networks have been abandoning CDMA deployments in favour of WCDMA/HSPA deployments. The whole CDMA/GSM debate is, as has been stated, moot, it simply doesn't matter any more.

I was referring to the title of the thread "who will be winner in US between GSM and CDMA". There's no doubt that GSM "rules the world" so to speak.

Even in the US everyone knows who the winner will be. It all started with Verizon as I said before. Once they have LTE up and running, it will be nice to see more choices on Verizon's lineup besides the boring LG and Samsung.

This is actually one of the benefits Vodafone can bring to Verizon. When Vodafone launched its 3G networks it did so as part of a global campaign with largely the same handsets being released worldwide on all Vodafone 3G networks. It would be nice to see them include Verizon in a similar campaign for LTE. There should be a nice mixture of Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, LG, HTC, and, if it's still fighting fit, Motorola.

But the US and Canada use different frequencies, so the only phones that would be the same would have to support all the bands. It's hard enough finding a quad-band GSM, tri/quad-band UMTS.

LTE will help with closely-related chipsets, but I fear there will still be delay in US releases. Must be payback for DVD releases or something.

That's true, but promisingly we have been seeing more quad band 3G handsets released of late, including high-end handsets. I would imagine Vodafone would try and exert some influence to persuade manufacturers to include frequencies used by Verizon as it will ultimately benefit Vodafone too.

I wonder how VZW plans to migrate to LTE. Will we see CDMA/LTE phones, or will we get LTE only phones with GSM international roaming? Or will VZW keep buying GSM networks and allow US customers with a LTE/GSM phone on them?

Going the CDMA/LTE route seems the most likely, but that won't help the cause of getting the same handsets as the rest of the world. Might be a rough transition until they have full LTE coverage. It could be like MetroPCS/Cricket's or T-Mobile's selection of AWS1700 phones. Pick from these FOUR, and that's it.

I'm also curious to see how the chip manufacturers implement LTE. We may see chips that can do UMTS and LTE on all the same bands due to a shared tuner. This would be better than the current GSM on these two bands/UMTS on these OTHER two bands implementations we keep seeing.

I thought that Canada used the same frequencies as the US. At least for GSM and CDMA I know that they are the same. I'm not sure about 3G or what the plans are for 4G, but I also thought they had a 700 MHz - type thing there too.

It's a good question. Personally I am doubtful of seeing CDMA/LTE handsets, at least not very many of them, simply for the fact that there isn't as big a market for them as for GSM/LTE handsets. You could be right, it might be a bit rocky for Verizon until they have good LTE coverage.
