Can I replace a broken metroPCS Motorola W385 with a cheaper one from Verizon/BesttBuy?

MetroPCS charges $150 for a new Motorola W385. Verizon sells them through Best Buy for $80. I just broke the screen on mine. I wonder if I can buy one from Best Buy and replace the chip in a cheap new one with the chip in the expensive old one. Or is it more complicated than that?

It is more complicated than that. You have to flash and program the phone. Sorry I cant provide any details on this as I dont want to be liable. Are you able to get on craigslist in your area or you could get on ebay and get a metro phone.

Mostly because of the proprietary setup of Verizon phones, to get it to work with Metro might be more than the phone is worth. You can ask Metro if they'd accept it, but unless you know your way around modifying a phone, it just isn't worth the bother.

Unless the phone you replace what you have with a phone in the ESN range that Metro has the answer is no. It's not as simple as it is with GSM phones (AT&T/T-Mobile) where you can just swap out the SIM chip.
