Default Sprint Mogul VS. AT&T Tilt

Hi Guys, it's been a while since I posted here and I'm basically coming back to bug you all with an annoying opinion question.

Basically I've moved to Atlanta, landed a decent paying gig, and am looking to get a new pda phone. I'm working in downtown Atlanta, living in Fayetteville and fixing to move to Dunwoody, all within 3g coverage of both Sprint and AT&T. At the moment I'm heavily leaning towards the TILT as my preferred device and the Sprint "Simply Everything" plan as my preferred plan. I'm having a hard time choosing, so I want to get some opinions. Post what you guys think and explain why.

Thanks

Well...

AT&T as you may know uses GSM which means you can use SIM cards to switch phones. The tilt is nice. AT&T will cost alot more for a comparable plan.

Sprint is CDMA so no SIM cards, but you can switch phones with online ESN swapping. Also Sprint; as you've said has Simply Everything - which seems it would fit your needs. And the Mogul is a good phone, with RevA EvDo, and GPS for Navigation!

Both devices run WM platform. So I think for you it will come down to who works best in your area. And for that no one except yourself can determine that - so use both Sprints and AT&Ts 30-day trials to their fullest testing to make sure the phones work how you want them to and where you want them to.

I have to say I've liked my Sprint service... but it all depends on what you need.

att is the top dog in atlanta. its no secret. they have the best coverage because theyve been there forever and have 850 and 1900 coverage.

the Tilt is basically the newer version of the Mogul as it has a newer Windows, better camera, a screen that of course "tilts" and a couple other things that give it a more updated advantage to the Mogul.

the simply everything is a good deal, anyone will tell you that is quiet a bit less than what ATT offers for unlim talk/text/web. so it comes down to would you rather save a few dollars or have better coverage and customer service and possibly even phone selection.

i guess you have a little deciding to do.

good luck!

Nothing against the Mogul, but I'd go for the Tilt, myself. It is a step above the Mogul, but not enough to negate it, but since you have AT&T service already, you don't have to go through the whole porting thing.

Jay has a Tilt and loves it. Hopefully he'll chime in with an owner's first-hand experience.

Why yes, I do love my Tilt, and AT&T's network in Atlanta is going to be hard to beat. Both are similar HTC devices. As Eric has mentioned, the Tilt is a somewhat newer model. Personally I'd say go for the Tilt, but in reality your real decision is who do you want your carrier to be? AT&T has a bigger selection of phones, and a large M2M calling group. I have been with AT&T/Cingular for almost 8 years, and I've been very satisified. I would not consider changing carriers.

Sprint has had more than its fair share of carrier bashing going on lately in these forums (and I shall continue with that tradition now), and I see them as struggling to stay out of bankrupcy. I don't think they ever fully recovered from the Nextel merger. With them going out on a limb for WiMax I fear that they will spend less on the current network, and eventually coverage and call quality is going to decline signifigantly. I've been to their corporate HQ here in Reston several times and I was never impressed. It seems that the bulk of the employees I met did not speak English well. Its almost an Orwellian feel as you step into the lobby of any of their buildings here. As soon as you step into the door you are assaulted by a display of 5 or 6 widescreen flat panel TV's all running Sprint commercials 24/7/365. Its almost like they are trying to brainwash you as you enter. I've never been to the corporate HQ of any other carrier, so maybe they all do this - I don't know. I just think if the employees are constantly living their lives with these commercials playing in the background that its like a subliminal message, and eventually they might believe everything said in the commercials, and repeat it when talking to customers.

Looks like what I initially thought is about right, I have a much better feeling for AT&T but grrr that sprint monthly price is hard to beat. I wished AT&T would go ahead and match the "Simply Everything" plan.

I am not enticed by anything Sprint offers. Here in their home market I know very few people on Sprint. I know a lot of people who moved from Sprint to either AT&T or TMO though. I was once driving from Sterling to Leesburg on Route 7 with some friends. I picked up my Cingular phone to call them in the other car. I had perfect signal, but they kept dropping out, and I only heard every other word they said. We eventually ended up just rolling down the windows and talking at a stoplight. That happened about 12 - 15 miles from their corporate HQ. One would think that they could adequately cover the area immediately surrounding their own HQ,on a major road to say the least.

Jay makes a good point. This a good example of getting what you pay for. There are markets sprint is good, I notice a lot of the soCal guys are happy, but ATL is not one of them. Are you sure you need the unlimted talk? It may save you a few bucks to go to a regular plan with rollovers. Just a thought.

Always go with coverage fist. So if AT&T is really that good, grab that Tilt (what the Mogul should of been) and run.

att has been in Atlanta since the Bellsouth Mobilitiy days, so basically since wireless began (late 80s) not to mention bellsouth and cingular both were based there. so its no secret to why they are so good there.

Unlike Sprint, which pioneered the digital phone market in the DC area, and now they have even worse coverage than TMO. I remember when Sprint started selling their "Sprint Digital PCS" service. I wanted one of their phones sooo bad, but they only had digital coverage inside the beltway at the time. I ended up waiting to buy a phone, and when I finally bought I got a TDMA StarTac with CellularONE.

my first TDMA was a nokia, i forget the model but it was the first small bar that had no antenna. it was a cingular phone. it was not bad except for when i went into the country and it roamed on analog verizon (i think, may have been alltel, i dunno) and it sounded like a waterfall. sorry for the Off topic, Jay is causing TDMA flashbacks lol

I loved my Startac, but GSM and HSDPA are soooo much better. I miss using a StarTac, but not the network issues that came along with it.

The Tilt has a better processor (twice as powerful) than the Mogul, doesn't it? That is another plus for the Tilt.

Jay, to be fair, Reston was the original Nextel HQ, so if Sprint wasn't perfect there, I can understand that somewhat. I bet Nextel works just fine in those areas. Sprint is flawless by all accounts in the Kansas City metro area, which is their "real" corporate HQ territory.

Well, to be exact then, the person I was calling on Rt7 was on a Nextel iDEN phone. I call it all Sprint now.

Hmm, I thought both the Tilt & the Mogul had a Qualcomm 400 MHz CPU.

The Tilt has more memory - 256 vs 96, and a 3+ megapixel vs 2+ megapixel camera.

They both have the same *crappy* slide out keyboard.

nKrypteD1, I was just going to ask you about at&t coverage in Alaska, I think I will post it on the board one of these days. Congratulations and good luck with your new job.

I don't use the keyboard much. I like to use the letter recognizer where I write on the screen and it is converted to text.

Yeah you are right, they have the same processor but the Tilt has much more RAM.

I never cared for the Mogul keyboard either...but it did beat a Treo IMO.
