Cellular At Home - "Land-Cellular Phones"

Like millions Americans I have canceled my traditional land lines, from the local phone company, at my home a few years back. My wife and children all have cellular phones, on a large cellular family share plan. We completely replaced traditional land lines with cellular and everything is great. I even bought docking stations for the cell phones so we can connect the cell phone to the traditional wired phones in my home. So now I have the best of both worlds, cellular on the go and land lines at home, all for the price cellular alone. Since they are hybrid combination of land lines and cellular, we called them land-cellular or land-cell phones for short and they work great!

The only issue with our land-cell network is it did take some time to get the wiring in our house right so it was compatible with multiple cell phones and docking stations. We also opted to get multi-line wired phones to support multiple cell phone calls at one time. One big up side is when the cell phone is plugged into the docking station it is constantly being recharged, so wife and kids can talk on the land-cell phones all day and night. Also, when docked, the cell phone rings almost everywhere in my house, there is no more running to find the cell phone. Also, every morning when I go to work I have fully charged cell phone.

Over the years since we installed this land-cell network many of our friends, coworkers and neighbors have either looked into installing their own land-cell network or have gone ahead set up their land-cell network. As I said it takes some work to initially set up a land-cell network, but the payoff is well worth it. I hope the in the future cellular phone manufacturers will create more equipment that can support this land-cell networking and that they make it easier for the customers to install and set up their own land-cell network. I think this would be a big win for both the cellular equipment manufacturers and consumers both.

My wife poses a social question regarding cell phones. She doesn't like calling a cell number because you might not know where the person will be or what the person is doing. Basically, she doesn't want to be rude to the person she's calling and others whom the call will affect. With a landline phone at home, people generally have a machine so you can leave a message and have them get back to you at a better time. With a cell phone, sometimes meetings or quiet environments get interrupted. Having to answer the phone while driving can even be dangerous.

Personally, I think the idea of having a single number is nice and this "land-cell" network sounds interesting. But what about childres that are too young to be carrying a cell phone? Do you really want your 10 year-old daughter's friends calling your cell phone? And what do you do if you lose power at home? Your landline will work as long as the CO has power, but your cell will need to recharge sometime. (I guess you could use a car charger)

I really like this idea. I think it would be nice to be able to use home phones when you get calls on your cellular phone.
