AT&T reported Thursday that it has added 13,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, accessible by its AT&T Remote Access customers, at locations including airports, hotels, and restaurants around the world.

The firm, which said its total hotspots now number 48,000 in 79 countries, noted that the hotspots enable mobile workers to link to their corporate networks. In addition AT&T said its Global Network Client has also been enhanced, enabling mobile workers to access the virtual private networks (VPNs) operated by their companies.

The AT&T Wi-Fi service includes nearly 15,000 hot spots in the U.S. that are available for AT&T Remote Access customers.

"Providing mobile workers with simple, flexible, wireless, or wireline access to their corporate infrastructure is a core business initiative for AT&T," said Mark Keiffer, AT&T Business chief marketing officer, in a statement. "AT&T will continue to expand its Enterprise Mobility portfolio through technologies like Wi-Fi."

The firm said new Wi-Fi facilities has been established at airports in Oakland, Louisville, Houston, and Salt Lake City as well as at Juan Valdez Cafes in the District of Columbia, Seattle, and New York City. The firm said it now provides Wi-Fi coverage at 81 U.S. airports, as well as at many shopping malls, hospitals, and hotels.
The effort to beef up its mobile workforce offerings includes enhanced support for wireless devices used by its Cingular Wireless unit.
