How can you determine carrier from phone number?

Is there any way now that mobile numbers are portable, to determine what carrier the number is hosted on?...

    You can try this site:

    http://members.dandy.net/~czg/search.html

This is one of the most useful sites I have ever come accross for finding out prefixes available in specific area codes. You can search information a variety of ways.
PacTel Cellular (1994) became AIRTOUCH (1994-2000) which became verizonwireless (2000-Present)

I wonder if they update those to account for people that port their numbers.

If I'm understanding your question, I think the answer would be no, since the carriers still hold the rights to those prefixes (and because they most likely are still issuing new/used numbers). This is just a guess though....

That site listed most of the VZW prefixes in the 615 area code as GTE, which merged with others to form VZW.

Awesome links! I don't have a daily use for this, but I think most of us want to know sometimes what carrier someone is on. Especially when you are talking to them and they are dropping calls left and right!

I am not sure that the websites will give you that. It gives the original owner of 3 digits and does not account for numbers that have been ported over. As an example my 3 digit prefix is listed as a Verizonicon no. and it originally was but it has been ported over to Cingular now. So someone checking into my phone number will still think I am on Verizonicon.

I hope I made some sense there.

The links are great though, thanks everyone for them.

Yep, I understand that. Although, you still have a good chance that you would be able to get the right carrier if you know they have had they haven't ported over! Good point though!

Many times you can just to to Yellow Pages : Superpages Yellow Pages, Maps, Driving Directions, Weather... and click the link for "reverse lookup". It never gives the name, but it always gives the registered carrier, and city that the number is based from.

Here you go this is the best thing that I have ever found. It is amazing it even works right after a number is ported.

What does this have to do with identifying a carrier? It is to sign up for amber alerts on your phone.

Also did anyone notice this thread is over 3.5 years old?

    Larry-
The question was how can one identify a carrier by a phone number. My answer was you can go to the wireless amber alert site with that phone number. You put the number on there and then it can tell you what carrier that number is associated with. Yeah surely it is to sign up for wireless alerts but it doubles as a carrier identifier as well. You don't have to sign up for those at all. Does this answer your question or do I need to explain like your a fifth grader?

First of all this type of comment is unnescessary and it's also not a good idea to talk to a moderator using that kind of tone.

Now that you explained it better it makes sense. However I wasn't aware that you could just enter a number to check the carrier without actually signing up for those amber alerts. Now that it's been established that you can I agree it is a good tool to use.

I didn't mean it in a bad way Larry, I was simply asking if you didn't get what I was saying I could break it down better for you.

to be honest, the guy had a fair chance to defend himself as your comments instigated his reponse IMO. If you are a moderator you should be setting the example for others...

also even though this thread is old i think it is very good and i personally have enjoyed the links. thanks.

No Eric that is not correct. I was simply asking what that link had to do with identifying a carrier and it was a fair question that could easily be answered. I did not realize you could check without signing up for those Amber Alerts. It was him that repsonded with a rude comment not me.

Now that we got that out of the way I would like to thank him for posting that function as it does seem like a good thing to use when needed.

I think we could go on all day about who did what and why they did but nothing will come out of it. I say lets get back on topic to this thread and if there is any more questions we should talk about it in private message.

What I think is neat about it is that if you port a phone number and then go to that site. It will update there as well within a matter of seconds. The thing I like best is that if a number is ported it will still tell you what carrier they are on. Not where the number originally came from.

I will also throw out a Welcome! Cellnutty why don't you fill out your profile more so we know where you are located and what carrier and phone you use? If you don't mind of course.

Welcome to WA Cellnutty. I agree why don't you fill out your profile so we can get to know our "knowledgeable new member" a little better.

As for making it a sticky, I would advice against it. The only intended reason to check a number is to ensure that it is the correct provider & they support that site. I would hesitate recommending the site for provider tracking only. btw, all the numbers entered are recorded

    Just my two cents
