You can try this site:

http://members.dandy.net/~czg/search.html

This is one of the most useful sites I have ever come accross for finding out prefixes available in specific area codes. You can search information a variety of ways.

I wonder if they update those to account for people that port their numbers.

If I'm understanding your question, I think the answer would be no, since the carriers still hold the rights to those prefixes (and because they most likely are still issuing new/used numbers). This is just a guess though....

That site listed most of the VZW prefixes in the 615 area code as GTE, which merged with others to form VZW.

Awesome links! I don't have a daily use for this, but I think most of us want to know sometimes what carrier someone is on. Especially when you are talking to them and they are dropping calls left and right!

I am not sure that the websites will give you that. It gives the original owner of 3 digits and does not account for numbers that have been ported over. As an example my 3 digit prefix is listed as a Verizon no. and it originally was but it has been ported over to Cingular now. So someone checking into my phone number will still think I am on Verizon.

I hope I made some sense there.

The links are great though, thanks everyone for them.

Yep, I understand that. Although, you still have a good chance that you would be able to get the right carrier if you know they have had they haven't ported over! Good point though!

Many times you can just to to Yellow Pages : Superpages Yellow Pages, Maps, Driving Directions, Weather... and click the link for "reverse lookup". It never gives the name, but it always gives the registered carrier, and city that the number is based from.

Here you go this is the best thing that I have ever found. It is amazing it even works right after a number is ported.

This always is a good site for me just type in the number and it should for the most part bring up the carrier.

What does this have to do with identifying a carrier? It is to sign up for amber alerts on your phone.

Also did anyone notice this thread is over 3.5 years old?

Larry-
The question was how can one identify a carrier by a phone number. My answer was you can go to the wireless amber alert site with that phone number. You put the number on there and then it can tell you what carrier that number is associated with. Yeah surely it is to sign up for wireless alerts but it doubles as a carrier identifier as well. You don't have to sign up for those at all. Does this answer your question or do I need to explain like your a fifth grader?
