My mom just got a Motorola v195 and I was reading her manual when I came across something that made me laugh out loud. On page 8 of the manual, under the heading Use and Care there are small pictograms and explanations as to what not to do to the phone. There is a little picture of a microwave and the caption says, "Don't try to dry your phone in a microwave oven." Man, and I was just about to do that, too!

LOL. How does she like her v195? We're getting them a little by little at my store. Any complaints or Motorola glitches?

I wonder if they also have a picture of a washing machine with "Do not clean phone in washing machine."? You know the only reason they have the Do Not Microwave message is that someone tried it, started a fire & sued them. -Jay

Seems like a pretty good phone, basic, no camera but with Bluetooth, which I think is awesome. I've already transferred all the pics from my wife's v600 and my v620 of our son to my mom's phone and offered to make her some ringtones using Xingtone. It's the standard MotoMenu but it, so far, seems to be glitch-free. The v195's menu runs much smoother than my v620, however I've only used the phone for about 12 hours now, so this isn't a full review, or anything. I think she'll be much happier with T-Mobile than she was with CellularONE (divested-- now USCC after the Alltel-WWC merger) because she won't get clocked with roaming or LD charges. She and my dad both had $20 plans with 60 anytime, 250 night and 250 weekend with a small, local coverage area. They were always getting roaming in Kansas City and Topeka. The plan is to add them both to my Family Time plan with 1,000 shared anytime minutes, unlimited nights/weekends/mobile-to-mobile and (eventually, if it's still available) the $20 unlimited message pack. This way, they pay $28+tax instead of $40+tax and get caller ID, VM and national coverage. I really think she'll like the v195 much better than her old Kyocera 1135. I'm glad she took my suggestion to go with the $19.99 Motorola v195, than the free Nokia 6010. "I want the Bluetooth," she said... I was so proud! *"Set it up," really means, "mess around with the phone after having optimized settings and entered phone numbers for my mom."

LOL, that's awesome. We're offering that phone for free. Too bad we only have a little in stock. Good, I feel good when I sold that v195. It looked like a pretty solid phone. Glad to see that it is. Quote:

Ahh... Cool! Finally some WAers have held and played with this phone. It has been getting some good reviews over a phonescoop. I was tempted to pick up the V190 when Wal-Mart had them for GoPhone for a short time. They look like they were more inline with the V300 and higher up Motos, then the older cheap V1XX & V2XX phones.

That is good to hear. I recommended the v190 & v235 to someone over at SU from the little I read and saw of them, I'm glad I did. Even though the posta after mine had to people saying how Moto is crap.

This is a little OT, but all I can think of is the time a few years back where David Letterman called the "GE Answer Center" to see if it was ok to put a plate of GE lightbulbs in a GE microwave oven. They said no, but he did it anyway. Great TV. -Jay

(Okay, the c33X series, v120 series, T7XX series and v66 were crap but given the number of phones that weren't crap, I take umbrage with that remark! I talked to a woman yesterday who left her v300 on the roof of her car and drove off, to return later, after the phone had, apparently, been run over several times and she turned it on and it still worked. "Crap," or not, that's impressive!)

Why, yes it is! It's not like Moto never made any good phones, and the other manufactures never made any of those crappy phones.

Images: 21 | The v180 was never a great phone. It wasn't really designed to be a great phone, though, just a basic, inexpensive phone. What Moto did wrong with the v180, they fixed with the v195. It's basic, inexpensive and great!

Images: 149 | While someone may have, it wouldn't take an incident to get a manufacturer to put a line like that in the manual all it takes is rumor of something happening. With how lawsuit happy people are it's all about CYA CYA CYA, assume people have no common sense and CYA CYA CYA!

Still, I would like to think that some poor, unsuspecting Motorola Customer Service operator took a call from someone who tried to dry off their V3 in a microwave... and that the representative recorded said conversation and that, one day, God willing, I will get to hear it on the internet.

I still wish I had a recording of a call I got when I was working part time on a help desk. This Rep. just got their Laptop back from our company for repairs & was running late for a flight, he threw it in his bag & took off. When he got to his destination he pulled out the laptop & he forgot he had a bunch of banana's in the bag & they got crushed by the laptop. Well the banana's ended up mushed in his LT keys & fan vent holes as well as his CD drive. I had to put him on hold a few times, so I wouldn't laugh while on the phone with him.

I would think it's a lot safer to use a blowdryer to dry a wet V3

Images: 21 | Great. Now, in the next MotoManual I get, it'll have a picture of a blowdryer with a line through it and a little warning about how not to use a blowdryer to dry out a wet V3. Thanks, ShoresGuy.

At least no one has thought about using the drier to dry their phones. |

That sounds like a great idea! Just use a pair of jeans. Insert the phone in a pocket & wrap into a ball.

We have a manual at work for Substation Entry guidelines and so forth as well as one for CSX Roadway Worker Safety, both have common sense rules such as don't stand in front of a moving train or don't grab live electricity conductors. The sad truth of it is, all these manuals are written in blood, ie. for every rule there's been someone to break it to get it written, it's how unspoken rules become spoken. I'm sure someone nuked their phone and wanted a replacement but why anyone would nuke electronics and expect them to work is beyond me

Here's a pic of the page of the manual (this pic is from the KRZR manual, but you get the idea.) Even funnier than the Microwave icon is The Ground. "To care for your Motorola phone, please keep it away from... The Ground. Don't drop your phone." But can I set my phone on the ground? Last edited by MOTOhooligan; 12-30-2006 at 9:49 AM. |
