Hi there, let's see a flip definition would be EDGE (EGPRS) is GPRS on steroids.

EDGE or EGPRS can enable data transfer rates of up to 385 kilobits/sec. GPRS rates go from s 9 to over 170 kbit/s .

EDGE is not directly related to 3G, infact EDGE is often referred to as 2.5G.

3G is based on WCDMA (or UMTS depending on which part of the world you are talking to).

I hope I made some sense, please let me know. :)

As Charlyee indicated, the designations 1G, 2G, 3G, etc., don't specify a particular technology or data rate. Rather they are "generations" or classes of technologies, each with their own data rates (both theoretical and practical). In general, each of the cellular providers is in the process of updating their networks/devices for 3G data rates and services.

For GSM providers the 3G technology is WCDMA/UMTS, as Charlyee said. This article has more detail including a nice list of standards/acronyms and lists EDGE as 2.75G (now that's really splitting hairs!! ).

SteveW, great article thanks. I suppose 2.75 G would be correct for EGPRS since GPRS is theoritically 2.5 G.

Thanks for your post, much better clarification than my cryptic one

kaskantambu, you always do ask thought provoking questions, that's great, makes me think.. Did your question get answered?

Geez Steven talk about trashing an excellent thread....

scrumhalf is probably getting a good laugh at your post since he had to correct me on the WCDMA/UMTS frequencies just yesterday.

PS: So what level is SteveW flirting at, since his reply was much more comprehensive than mine, or don't you believe in Equal Opportunity......?

    Charlyee:

I surrender to my teacher---my mentor in WA. I could never compete with an Engineering Degree from NASA, as well as someone who worked on the Lunar Rover and was one sick astronaut away from being the Commander during a shuttle mission. Not to mention a degree from MIT and an IQ of almost 247.3.

Charlyee - all I did was add in some background information that you already know, but perhaps the OP did not. Since I don't know all this stuff off the top of my head, I looked it up in Wikipedia. That's what I like about this community - everybody can add in their little contribution.

Personally, I don't place too much stock in the 2.75 G, 3.14159 G kind of stuff, since technology proceeds incrementally. All this talk about "generations" of technology is a bit artificial, don't you think? More marketing than anything else, IMHO.

Ironically, the word "mensa" in spanish means "stupid", at least in Mexico. LOL!

Steve, you are being far too modest.

I agree with you, the 2.75 G etc. is just a marketing gimmic (what is not?). I am surprised that nobody has talked about a 3.14159G, G, I think that sounds very catchy and would be yet another marketing ploy....

At least its not like Kirby vacuum cleaners. The only difference between the Generation 3 "G3" through the G6 is just the colors of the various models and a slight headlight variation...
