    Default V557

    Hey everyone,
I am sure this has been asked but could not find it anywhere. I would like to use my V557 as a modem on my laptooth which has bluetooth capabilities. If I got the unlimited media net package will that be all I need so as not to incur unecessary costs? And also how do I know if my area has EDGE so the speed is up to par and not like dial-up? I do remember Jay saying EDGE is like a low end DSL line which I am sure is better than dial-up speed. Thanks for any help.

Based on this map it appears that Cingular does have EDGE in Massachusetts but you'll want to find out from someone more acquainted with Cingular's offerings to make sure the unlimited Media net will work for your phone being a modem to your laptop. The Cingular site was rather vague about that.
Is it too much to ask for a phone with physical buttons?

Joe, my V557 shows the "E" where the GPRS symbol is, signifying that there is Edge. What does yours say?

PS: OT, but the "E" is irritating me since PEBL does not have it and I like the PEBL better and it's my primary phone.

What a minute, now I am confused. Doesn't the fact that you have an "E" on the phone mean that the phone is ready to be used on EDGE because it is reading the presence of EDGE? Please don't tell me that on Moto phones "E" only means that the phone is EDGE capable? If that's the case I am going back to Nokias......

No, the "E" signifies that the phone is connected to an EDGE network, otherwise you'll get the GPRS icon.

So it does mean that there is EDGE in the area right???

So if Josephd's and mine show E, it means we have EDGE in our respective areas..... true?

    Thanks jay

To quote Ed McMahon "You are correct!" Its kinda like the "D" in the old TDMA days indicating you are using digital service. It doesn't show up unless the service is present.

I just went to unlimited data today. I benchmarked the speed and it came in just under an ISDN line's speed with my V551 & data cable. Are you using MPT Joe?

Yes Jay, I was trying to connect via bluetooth. But if you think MPT with a usb is better I will try that route. And if I am correct if I get the unlimited media net that should cover me? Thanks Jay

I get an error 692: there was a hardware failure in the modem(or other connecting device.) That is while using MPT with a USB. I got connected but it seemed slow 57.6 klbs. that could be because I have terrible reception I do not know.

I was connecting at 115.2 or something like that, and confirmed it by doing an internet benchmark test. The upload speed was very slow though, like 28.8. I can't wait to get a 3G phone later this month. Give your USB cable a try and see if thats better.

Jay, that was what I was using, I could not connect by blue tooth. I was surprised for EDGE how slow it was a lot of the pages timed out, no wonder it eats up a lot of data. Anyway at least I got it to work, I am hoping Moto does come out with a 3G phone as well. Thanks again

Did you have good signal showing on your phone? Mine is downloading almost as fast as an ISDN line, my uploads are like 28.8 though.

No Jay, my signal in my house is not like it was this past winter always holding 3 and 4 bars. Like I said before once leaf peeping season is back my service suffers somewhat in my house, now I get only 2 bars maybe three if I am lucky.

On my 557 I show the "E" all the time. It does not switch to GPRS like my 551 did? Not sure why or what it means, as sometimes it is fast, sometimes it is slow?

The MPT will give you trouble if you contact Cingular on any problems, as the will tell you they do not support it! In fact, now that I quit MPT & went with Cingular's own Connection Manager, they tell me they do not support Bluetooth!!

On the Media Net, in spite of what my local store told me & sold me, it is only for use on your phone! It is the same "connection", but when teathering, they will eventually catch you & make you switch to the Unlimited Internet, for $59.95 per month. They sent me a text message after about a year giving me a week to switch over or I would be dropped!! I switched...

Not sure all I am telling you is Gospel, but it is and/or has been for me...

    Just my 2 sense..

The early models of the V551 had a software bug that prevented them from showing the "E" when connected to an EDGE network. (I suspect this may have been engineered that way to keep people from complaining before the EDGE buildout was complete.) This was fixed in later versions of the firmware. Even on an early model V551, if it was connected to an EDGE network, you got EDGE speeds, even though the icon displayed was GPRS. You are also correct that unlimited media net is for surfing on the phone only, and eventually they will catch up with you.

Thanks for all the help and info guys, at this point I am exploring plan B.... possible another carrier which would probably be VZWicon since my friends and Family have them.
I anticipated my house being sold by now and my service issues would be a memory, but I cannot deal with going through a whole spring and possible summer season with my inconsistent and terrible Cingular service in my house,it more than likely has to be a foliage issue.
That's why my upload and download speeds were worse than dial up, my phone is usually showing 1 maybe 2 bars to no service so it is understandable why I cannot use this phone as a modem.
