Default local portability

Hi, I'm new to this forum

this question might have been asked before, by why is cell phone number portability only local? Is it strickly a legal thing, or an actual coverage issue? It doesn't make sense to me that I can get a cell phone in, say, new york, and use it in LA, but I can't move to LA and I keep the new york number.

Is there a way of getting around this? If I purchase a new phone and plan on the web, enter in an old zipcode, and try to transfer my old number, will it work?

any insight that people have into this would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Default Re: local portability

Your final cell phone bill is based on the state you live in. You are taxed differently based on the state (and in some cases, the city) of you cell phone number. I believe they determine your phone number based on the billing address.

Cell phones are not "versatile" as VOIP where you cna have any area code you want. I believ you may be albe to get a VOIP service and forward your calls to your cell phone. I'll let others chime in on that thoguht.
