|  near future applications...???
Does anyone know the likelyhood or availability of a user accessible GPS application ?? I know that the technology is there for E911 but it could be a very usefull tool for the the user as well. My dreams of a moving map application for a cellphone just won't go away... ever since I got the color display... |

For U.S. GSM and TDMA networks, the handsets do not use GPS for location determination. For cdma2000 networks on the other hand employ A-GPS (Assited-GPS) handsets. There are BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) APIs (Application Programming Interface) that are able to extract location information from a A-GPS, BREW-enabled handset, but as far as I know there are no commercial BREW applications available that do that right now. Also, since user location privacy issues have not been resolved at the government level, it is still unclear when commercial location based services will become available to the public.
