Nokia Delivers World's First GSM/EDGE 3G Mobile Phone With Style, Convenience And High-Speed Data

- EDGE Capable Nokia 6200 Tri-Band Phone Brings Third Generation Speed And
Services to the User -

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced
the Nokia 6200 tri-band (GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1800/1900MHz) phone, the world's
first 3GPP compliant EDGE (Enhanced Data-Rates for GSM Evolution) handset,
offering users advanced voice features and robust mobile data services via
high speed Internet connectivity. The Nokia 6200 phone also represents the
first mobile phone to support GSM 850, 1800 and 1900 frequency bands.
Deliveries for operator controlled live network tests of the Nokia 6200
handset will begin in Q4 2002. Commercial availability for first customers is
expected to begin Q1 2003.
GSM evolution to EDGE is a much needed technology enhancement because it
alleviates some voice traffic bandwidth and enables higher data throughput,
therefore maximizing overall efficiency and performance of the network and
services. EDGE provides the platform for more efficient content delivery and
more robust mobile services such as MMS, XHTML and Java(TM) technology at data
speeds initially more than double that of existing GSM/GPRS networks.
"No technology is an economic success for the technology itself. What
people want is effortless mobility, value-add applications and services, and
fast, simple access to information on the go," said John Barry, director,
mobile phones business unit for Nokia. "The Nokia 6200 handset allows users
to take advantage of all of that with access to richer content and more
advanced services at high speeds and allows carriers to begin realizing ROI
for their next generation EDGE network investments."
The feature rich Nokia 6200 phone boasts a large, high resolution color
display optimized for image display and XHTML browsing, features predictive
text input and an ergonomically designed keyboard with large buttons for fast
and easy mobile messaging, and supports MMS for sending and receiving messages
containing text and pictures. Users can also enjoy a high-quality sound
experience with polyphonic MIDI ring tones, the integrated stereo FM radio,
and voice recordings.
With the Nokia 6200 EDGE handset, users are able to download content,
applications, access Internet and intranet information quickly and efficiently
at data rates approximately two times (up to 118 kbps) that of conventional
dial up (56 kbps). Personal data from the calendar, address book and to-do
lists can also be remotely synchronized over the air with a network server or
locally with a PC using IR (infrared) or an optional data cable to keep vital
information up to date.
The Nokia 6200 also supports Java technology enabling users to download
personalized content and applications of their choice, whether it is for
entertainment, lifestyle management, or travel, for example. The Nokia 6200
phone also features an enhancement connector designed to support advanced
functionalities such as digital accessory identification, stereo audio or fast
data connectivity. The addition of the optional Nokia Camera Headset lets you
capture and share images with a simple click and send.
Additional features of the Nokia 6200 phone include:
-- Four way scroll for faster navigation
-- Multiple numbers and addresses per name
-- Voice memo, recording, dial and commands
-- 780 mAh Li-Ion battery with up to 8 days standby time and up to
4 hours of talk time
-- SMS (short message service), and MMS (multimedia message service)
-- Integrated hands free speaker for ringing, game tones and phone calls
-- XHTML WAP support
-- MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) Ringing Tones

What I don't understand is why this phone has the 1800Mhz band and not the 900Mhz....
