Hi, I'm planing on getting a new phone and a line, I've been looking into getting a tri-band GSM. I really like the T68i, V70 and the new moto (don't remember the model). I've heard ATT just got the GSM network in San francisco/bayarea, does anyone using their network ?? how's the coverage ? Where can I get a good deal on a T68i or similar phone with new activation, the rate plan I'm looking at around $40. thanks in advance. I live in San jose area. |

I would recommend T-Mobile. There GSM coverage is fully developed, and not small like AT&T's. I believe the name of that other Motorola model you were talking about is the Motorola t720. T-Mobile has this phone, the t720i. I don't know if this includes a new upgrade or what, but they added the "i" to the end for some reason. It must be an upgrade of some sort. T-Mobile also has the v70 that you were speaking of. I would recommend the Samsung S-105 out of all of their phones though. Motorola phones have been pretty disappointing as of late. Please click this link to view all of T-Mobile's current phones. |

In the places where AT&T is converting its TDMA directly to GSM, coverage will be just as it is with TDMA. In other words, if their existing TDMA is in the 800Mhz and they are moving to GSM 800, coverage will end up being the same. However, in places where they are building 1900Mhz GSM but their TDMA is at 800Mhz, then I bet coverage will be full of spots. Their 1900Mhz GSM and 800Mhz TDMA sites are in the same place so unless they add more sites to fill the holes, their 1900Mhz GSM will be spotty.

While it is true that in time AT&Ts GSM coverage area will match their TDMA area, it doesn't yet even though they have launched all their pre-Telecorp markets. In their 3Q report filed last week, they stated they have GSM coverage to 78% of their TDMA area....171 million people. T-Mobile coverage is currently at 211 million, and they have better highway coverage than AT&T GSM.

in cali T-mobiles network is Cingular's network they are sharing. While ATT is converting they are really doing an overlay of their existing network switching out some site to GSM and gradually migrate their network over to GSM...but that wont be for a while as they will have to switch all their users over to GSM. My friend started ATT GSM service down here in socal and at one point his phone's banner said "cingular" so for that brief moment where he wasn't in an ATT coverage area he was "roaming" on Cingular's network...how funny is that?

ohhh so thats how it works? i think here in the DC area ATT has the 1900GSM layed up. do you guys know when they will start putting up 850towers up in places they dont? ATT gsm is ebing thrown up and improved upon at an impressive rate, and im just curious as to when i can exploit my better building penetration with my 850mhz capable t720 | |

While it might be true that AT&T won't be putting up new 800Mhz towers where they dont have them, that's probably because they won't be able to get an 800Mhz license for those areas. In that case they need to establish an agreement with the local 800Mhz provider or build their own coverage at 1900Mhz. However, AT&T will convert their TDMA 800Mhz networks to GSM in a few years. Therefore, if AT&T has TDMA 800Mhz in your area, watch for them converting it to GSM when the TDMA/Analog phaseout begins. This means there will be places where they will have BOTH 1900Mhz and 800Mhz GSM coverage such as NYC. Their GSM is now at 1900Mhz only. But the bulk of their spectrum is at 800Mhz using TDMA.

In California, Cingular and T-Mobile share a common network (ie. they have exactly the same coverage). AT&T's coverage in that area isn't fully formed yet. For the latest accurate maps go to http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml You will have to look at Cingular's network to get where T-Mobile has coverage in CA/NV. Amazon.com has a great deal on the T68i w/T-Mobile service. Only $25 after mail in rebate. |

GSMWorld still doesn't show new Cingular GSM coverage.
