Default Cingular class action lawsuit.

The other day we got a letter in the mail telling us that a Cingular class action lawsuit had been settled out of court. Apparently, Pacific Bell Wireless had sold Nokia 2190s, 5190s, and 6190s while promising they could hold 255 names and numbers, but their SIM cards only held 80.

The settlement means we get a $10 mail-in rebate off $10 or more worth of Nokia accessories, and we can take the phone to a Cingular store and have them swap the SIM card and transfer the data.

Uh?

This required a class action lawsuit?

I don't have my Nokia 6190 anymore, and I don't have Cingular service anymore, so I've recused myself from the lawsuit, but good Lord 'n butter...

It's completely pointless from a user perspective, but the lawyers get 1/3 of the *entire settlement*, so it's not pointless to them. Just think of it as millions in capital that could have been used to upgrade the network flushed down the toilet.

That's why I don't want T-Mobile to have anything to do with Cingular. T-Mobile doesn't need these petty, stupid problems, costing millions of dollars to the company.

Like you, I got that letter in the mail; I agree that it was a gross waste of court time.

Unlike you, I am still with Cingular, still have my 6190 -- and am still running on my old pre-Cingular PacBell SIM card !

Do you think it would be worthwhile to upgrade my old SIM card under the terms of this settlement? And do you know if I can apply that whopping $10 credit toward upgrading my recently-crushed-the-LCD 6190? I'm thinking of buying an unlocked 6310i, and am wondering if the old PacBell SIM card will even work in it.

Any advice from the esteemed Mr. Beelblebrox would be greatly appreciated. Cheers mate,
Christa

I would have the SIM replaced on your 6190 so that you don't need to worry about whether or not it will work. The $10 is reserved to accessories, I think, but I'm not entirely sure, as I threw out the letter after I recused myself. Who knows, maybe you can buy accessories that will fit your 6310i.

Good luck!

When I was with Cingular I was actually pretty anoyed that they used the old/bad sim cards. A lot of options (like manual network search etc) have not been supported by that sims. I called CS once and asked if I could get an updated sim and they wanted to charge me $30 or so.

If I would still be a Cingular customer I would have my sim upgraded.

C.

PS: I also got the letter...
