I am using a novatel PCMCIA card modem through the sprint VISION network. I have noticed that I can't maintain a persistent connection with a server. I can surf the web and do email all day long, but I can't seem to connect to a remote computer using PC Anywhere. I also tried to play a cheesy online game (http://www.popcap.com/multiplayer.ph...e=psychobabble if you must know) where you are in a chatroom setting with other people. I can access both quickly and easily using my laptop when it is in its docking station, but when I use the novatel card I can't get connected. Does sprint have a firewall on the network that prohibits persistent connections? Does anyone know a workaround? Will sprint improve their service to allow this? Honestly, if you can't use PcAnywhere and programs like it then its much less useful.

I know the Vision phones disconnect after every request, and then reconnect for the next. It makes things quite difficult, so I force the connection to stay busy. Just open a DOS window and create an "eternal" ping. E.g. PING -T GOOGLE.COM That should keep the device connected, and only using a small amount of bandwidth, so it shouldn't degrade your main activity. |
